if you are certain it is the gearbox you can try adjusting the backlash on it, you should see a skinny bolt with a nuton it that comes out of the top of the gearbox, all you do is loosen the nut and turn the bolt with an hex(allen) wrench I do not remember wich way you need to turn it, I would turn it a little bit and tighten the nut and try it. It might take a few tries toget it right, but it is worth a try. if you go too far the steering wheel will not want to return on it's own after you turn. Just incase you have overlooked it the intermediate shaft ( shaft right before gearbox) is a common item that like to wear along with idler arms and pitman arms, but I am sure you checked those before you decided to try a steering gear

Thanks, I have tried adjusting the gear box but it didn't help, the rest of the steering linkage seems to be tight.

My truck is a 97 and I had to replace my Ideler & pitman arm... I need to do my tie rods soon. Yours may be ok but I just saying my truck has 4 less years of wear and tear on it. I probably need to check my intermediate shaft as well.

The cheapest one I could find was at Advance Auto Parts http://www.partsamerica.com/Default.aspx it was about $180 and comes with a lifetime warrantee. It is hard to go wrong with a part with a lifetime warrantee
