Type of Coolant?

I have a 1999 Passat 1.8T. Besides some suspension problems, I have been rather happy. It is currently low on coolant (but is heating cooling fine).
The manual says to use a specific type of coolant (can't remember the type off hand). When I go to an autoparts store all they have is universal coolant. It says it can be used for any make, model or coolant color.
Do I need to go to the dealership, or can I use the universal type?

use VW ONLY g12 pink coolant. or add some water
