timing belt broke

i have 00 kia sportage manual. i bought the car from a friend and its not the fuel pump like i thought, its the timing belt. the timing belt is broke. can i just replace the timing belt or do i need to take the head off? thanks in advance.

You can just replace the belt (http://geocities.com/lmp4203/kiasport/timingbelt_.jpg). THis is a non interference engine so it just stops and it does not hurt anything. What mileage did you have?
