ok i have a 93 grand prix and it has the computer in the middle of the console, it holds the date and time but the compass works only part time and the oil/filter tuneups etc functions after i reset it it still beeps and says to check oil/ all the filters and stuff, the mpg thing and the range seem to be working ok besides when idling down it going up to 80 mpg, and when accelerating 7 or so. any clues would be appreciated thanks

The ecu, the one that controlls you car, it needs to be reset. it is in safe mode. im not supprised if the compus does not work either. The dealer needs to to this.

safe mode? never heard of it... you can reset the pcm/ecu by pulling the ecm fuse out for 15 minutes or so, or by disconnecting the battery. keep in mind you may have to do an idle relearn after you do this.
some driver information centers are just quirky, and may never work right. are you sure you're resetting the functions properly? does it just say "miss op" when you are doing it? if so, you have to hold the reset button down until you see "miss op" disappear and the mileage resets.
if none of that works, you may just ned a new one.

There is such a safe mode on the computer, but it resents after a few cycles sometimes. I know pontiac has this on there computers.

how do you do an idle relearn, turn car on press gas and then turn off car while holding the gas ?

I idel relearns in about 20 sec. After you re-set the cpu, the car will shake and it will seem to act as if it wants to stall, and then it will run perfact,well.. at least how it ran before. I wish if this happend it would turn back the time when it had 5 miles on it.lol I wish..The one way that i know to re-set the computer is by the dealership. Now i have heard of resetting it by disconnecting it from the batt for 20 sec or so,but i heard in this case, the car will run fine from the start....not sure why this is, but if anybody know, let me know.

w-body.com is pretty much the authority on 88-97 w body cars. noone there so far had heard of a "safe mode." unless maybe you're talking about open loop[?

i found something in alldata called "limp home fuel mode." but from what i can tell, it would have no affect on the driver information center (that's the center console computer).
also, the car would be running terribly as "limp home fuel mode" just dumps more gas into the cylinders.
if the computer were in this mode, it would no as something in the ecm has failed.
my guess is till that you are not resetting the driver info center correctly. what you need to do is cycle to the function you want ot reset. then, wait until the words stop scrolling before you touch the reset button. when the words are done scrolling, hold the reset button until the imleage resets.
your fuel economy and range functions sounds normal to me. evry driver info center does what you are describing when accelerating or idling.
hope that helps
