I'd just like to know if anybody knows about what the cost for the 60,000 mile service on a 2.4L DOHC 'nata would be? I know this is 'the big one' and includes changing the drive belts so I'd like to know what the damage is going to be before dropping off my car. Thanks.

It depends on the dealer. Each dealer does different things at the service intervals. $400 is too low for a 60k, especially since it would need a timing belt as well. At our dealership, for a 60k we change oil and filter, air filter, pcv valve, fuel filter (if serviceable), spark plugs, timing belt and tensioner, flush coolant, flush transmission fluid, oil treatment, 3 part fuel induction clean, and all the inspection stuff. Some dealer will only drain and fill the coolant, or drain and fill the transmission fluid. Just doing a drain and fill on the coolant is fine, but I definately prefer a flush of the transmission fluid. Only doing a drain and fill only gets the 4 or 5 quarts out of the pan, it doesn't get the other 5 quarts or so out of the torque converter. So be sure if you call around and get prices you ask what they are doing for their 60k service. Some dealers might be a lot cheaper than others, but it's usually because they cut corners getting there.

I had a similar Sonata and I was faced with the same problem, along with getting the brakes done, new tires, the timing belt and drive belt replaced; and whatever else need replacing/fixing at 60,000miles ..
I figured out the total cost was not worth it, and ended up trading in the car.
Most dealers charge between $1,000-$1,500, if not more, for the 60K maintenance - including Time and Drive belts... depending which dealer you take it to, to be ripped off.
Plus I figured $600 for tires, $400-$500 for brakes , another $500 for miscellaneous items which need taking care of. It comes to around $3,000+ grand total!
So I walked away from it, and got a new car... considering that the Hyundai dealers take advantage of the required maintenance imposed by the manufacturer; to say the least !

Well, for one I love my car and paid plenty for it not too long ago, so I'll be stickin by it for awhile. Also, I put new wheels and tires on the thing not 6,000 mi ago. Plus, not being the first owner of the vehicle, I don't get the 100k mi warranty, mine ends at 60k so any services at this point are at my discretion. $400-$500 for brakes? Wow.. dunno where you got that quote from.. but then again I suppose it may be that high, I've never had them done, always done them myself. Last time, I got both front and back pads for under $80 at auto zone and took the rotos to Big 10 to be turned for a small fee.

The prices I mentionned are Dealer's... Unfortunately, I am not mechanically handy like many people!

As far as the timing belt goes, it is imperative to replace it within the time frame/mileage mentioned in the manual.

It is an interference engine, in other words that means, if the belt breaks, it pushes the valves into the pistons and it is good bye engine!

The new 2006 Sonata have a Timing Chain, and not the Belt; so they are not required to service/replace the chain!

OK, well I went down to Capital Hyundai here in Montgomery today and the 'service advisor' guy gave me a printout showing everything that they do for each service and the flat fee for each. For 60k, the procedure includes: Change oil and filter, Install engine system cleaner, replace drain plug washer, inspect and fill all fluids, rotate and balance tires, check and adjust tire pressure, clean and service battery terminals, replace air cleaner filter, cooling system flush and replace coolant, inspect front and rear brakes, replace wiper inserts, inspect fuel lines hoses and connections, inspect driveshafts and boots, inspect suspension mounting bolts, inspect vapor hose and fuel filler cap, inspect exhaust pipe and muffler, install windsheild washer solvent, inspect upper ball joint, install ZMAX fuel treatment, transmission flush - fluid replacement. Listed price for this service is $477.24 + taxes. Yes, I know I can do without some of that, but that is what came verbatim off of the sheet priced. They also said that the timing belt is not part of regular maintenance so that would have to be a separate service and would cost approximately $425.00 + taxes.

That ZMax shit is a joke. I read a report on some website, I forget where. Some guy used ZMax just like they tell you to do, and always used Synthetic oil. After something like 50k miles, the inside of the engine was filled with sludge. Same car with Synthetic oil, without ZMax looked brand new. I'd keep that crap out of my car is I were you. The price they gave you is about right for a 60k without belt, but you will need it done as well, so tack that on to your bill.

LOL, I know about the ZMax, I've heard quite some stories on my own. I went to a local shop, the same one who put the Jasper engine in my truck, and got a quote for the work there. After taking the ZMax, balance and rotate(just done with new wheels and tires), air filter replacement(will be getting an intake soon), and wiper replacement off and adding timing belt replacement and balance belt(?) replacement, the quote came to just around $700. Not too bad, the work will be done next week
