97 Avenger dieing

Can someone please help? My 97 avenger starts and then dies. When it dies, it makes a noise. Sometimes it starts, but then dies within 5 min. When it first happened, it died 4 times within 15 min. Then, when it started the final time, it made it's way back home, and the next day it was worse. So, I took it to the auto shop, they replaced the distributor, that didn't work. They replaced the crank sensor, that didn't work. Luckily the shop was able to return these parts so we didn't have to pay for it. Now the shop tried to recreate the problem for two days, driving it around and the car wouldn't die. Shop says they knowthe problem isn't fixed, but gave the car back because they don't know what it could be. Picked up the car today and when it started it made the same noise, I let it warm up and it made it home, but then as I just found a parking spot, it died. The car ride home was approx. 15 min. Has anyone had this problem or heard of it? If so, what was done to fix it?

Thanks, my husband just said the car starts, it's the dieing part. He said he thinks it's the ABS Relay as the noise is coming from that...he thinks.

ok well maybe its not the coil... but ive had very similar things happen twice and both times it was the coil. so good luck. a bad ignition coil wont stop it from starting itll just run like crap.

Thanks for the info. After much discussion, I think we are buying a new car. I love the Avenger, but I think it's time to get rid of it...just problem after problem (I often joke that lately the car knows when payday is). :p

I am having the same problem. When you heat it up again and it dies.Unplug the fan sensor and see if it runs again.Mine does that.

for one thing i have to say that you are smart to get rid of it because i have the same problem with mine... you can change all the sensors that you want i know that dodges are notorious for electrical problems, i am changing my computer, i had a bad motor, put a new one in it and it continues to do the same thing which means when the motor was swapped so were all my sensors, i changed the fuel filter, fuel relay, checked all my grounds, thought possibly the fuel pump but there aint no way that it would be doing this for a year if it was a faulty fuel pump i reccomend the computer ECM try that and then get rid od it because once you change that something else will for surely go MOPAR dont go far!!!!:shakehead
