I have bad synchros and i was wondering what would be the best fluid to change to so i dont have to go spend thousands of dollars right now to buy a new tranny. I had heard "REDLINE, Synchromesh ,B.G Synchro fluid, etc" but has anybody actually used any of these products, and had any succes out of them?

Any synthetic will do. I flushed mine 6000 miles ago, and added Prolong (or was it Slick50???) for transmission... The combination works grrr-eat! if you're adding the prolong, try heating it up under the sun 1st, since putting it in cold can be uber-bitch...

Did you have any kind of problems before hand like the bad synchros or grinding or do you do that as a part of your mantienance schedule? Ill try that, im hoping to find a way to fix the problem without having to buy a new tranny.

Not really a problem...I just bought my car and it was idling roughly... so I changed all of the fluid, including tranny's, and added prolong and slick50s in both the engine and tranny. That solved a lot of my complaints... what do you mean bad synchros? the gears didnt switch @ its intended RPM?

my tranny is FUCKED can barely get it into 2nd gear, i just go from 1st to 3rd in the city
i used those back when i t first went out, yes they kinda work but you gotta watch out for leaks, that shit leask outta ur tranny alot ewasyer then regular gear oil when heated up

Ok thanks, which brand would you recommend that worked the best? Im going to drain the tranny completly and check for shaving etc then refill it with the new fluid.

Ok cool. ill try that.. then run one of those magnets on a stick in there to get loose metal. Should i run some new fluid in there for a short time then change it again in a week or so? or will once do the job.

Flushing is always good practice when changing fluids for engine and/or transmision... I always did so...most of the times I bought extra bottles so I can flush it twice in one setting... In both mine and my roomate's trannys, I pushed the trottle up to 45-50 mph in all existing gears, (reverse is about 15?) when flushing... THIS IS VERY dangerous and SCARY as hell, since that thing is on a pair of jacks... I would recommend taking it to a shop for about 70 bucks?...

Surprising that additives can even do something to your messed up tranny... wtf?? is anything lodged in between the gears or something? I heard ppl are doing this on purpose just to save gas... like..you knw, corvettes can only shift from 1st to 4th, skipping 2-3, they put something to prevent shifting the gear... the purpose of this is to meet emmission standard, etc, etc, etc....
O yeah! BTW, I actually changed my tranny pan AND gaskets as well when I did that... I mean, I heard also about possible leaks from a mechanic, but none so far. Maybe because I got new gaskets n all.

Thats what i planned to do. Im going to drain everything and replace the gaskets and seals and make sure there isnt any metal lodged anywhere. Im sure there will be a few shavings from the synchro problem.
Which brings me to my unanswers question of a few days ago. Where can i get gaskets and seals. I want them for everything not only tranny because im going to redo my motor. Im trying to get the internals built and reliable so i can build the cars performance.

woah, you're doing complete overhaul? I guess the easiest (and most pricey) place to get gaskets are dealers, thats for sure... I typed in "5s-fe gaskets" on ebay search and it gives some stuff as well, slighty cheaper (shipped). Or you can get them from online junkyard/parts wholesale centers... but combined w/ S&H, usually the price gets closer to those from dealers'... So, since you must get new gaskets anyway, it doesnt really matter much where you get them. Just make sure they're the good stuff.

Yeh thats my main concern is that they are all gonna fit and be a quality product. Im not doing a COMPLETE overhaul, i just want to get the importants stuff checked and fixed before i start putting to much power under the hood, I had bad synchros and a slipping clutch so im fixing it and then im just gonna replace the head gaskets and valve seals that way i dont start loosing oil or anything , and i know the engine will have be strong enough to handle 180-200 hp with 131k on the odometer. haha

Just drain all the fluid out and leave it out you dont need it anyway. When the gears get hot they'll all melt together and then you will kind of have an automatic with a clutch. Just pop the clutch and you'll never have to shift again lol. No lube is gonna help something that is worn out. Just find Junkyard tranny, put it in and problem solved but for now youre just avoiding the inevitable.

use your dipstick as measurement. check the level when its hot, bc you're most likely running your engine anyway. I had something like 4 quarts? or was it less, don't really remember bc I actually had 2x 1 gallon and used most if em to flush it twice, and also added prolong. You can always ask that guy in the cashier register for the exact amount I guess, but using the dipstick is really making it sure. Dunno about royal purple stuff. You can keep us posted w/ the results. Im using castrol just for the heck of it, figured the logo sticks w/ its rally-bred use, made me and my st feel superficially special.

Ha Yeh thanks ill ask the guy at the shop. Reason i chose Royal purple is because all the dynos theyve done on it and the sopposd 8-15 hp gain <-- dyno proven??? haha and all this other stuff it does for your engine im gonna change everything this weekend and next weekend and ill post a new thread on it after i drive it a little. If you want to see they dynos and test or any info on Royal purple Go here. http://www.royalpurple.com/techa/whyrpa.html <<Info

its interesting how it claims to supress pollution. How does that work? maybe worth trying if I want to turbo my stuff...maybe I can pass emission test...lol thx, keep us posted!

update.... I changed the transmission fluid Friday. I was suprised to find out that it actually made a difference.. I had BAD synchros and after the job was done i took it out for a drive and it completly fixed 3rd gear on the up shift...(it wasnt as bad as second) and signifiganly improved 2nd but i still have a little grind. It didnt help alot with downshifting the synchros but in all the other gears everything felt 10 times smoother. Downshifts i didnt get as much resistance.. and if was MUCH easier to shift in all the gears.
I will changed the motor oil this weekend and then post another update on gas improvement etc.

My synchros is shot and now my second is too in my 2000 toyota celica GTS. My buddy suggested just getting a new tranny? What do you guys think?
