Quatro Engine code P0741

My 2000 Audi A6 Quatro has exhibited a check engine code of P0741 (TCC - selenoid circuit performance stuck off). My mechanic can't tell me any more than that. Does any one have any more detail regarding this code? They tell me that the transmissions are not repairable for the most part - you just buy a new one. Is this a minor issue I can ignore or is there some action I can take besides forking out $4.5K for a new tranny?
