Hard to shift from DRIVE to PARK

I have a 98 Mercury, Mystique, 6 cylinder engine. I recently noticed that the column became very resistive to shift from "drive" to "park". I have to pull on it very hard to park the car. Would someone please give me some directions for how to fix this problem? Thank you.
