My girlfriend and I were talking about whether it is actually possible to die of fright or not. I would think that unless your heart was in pretty bad condition and u got scared into having a heart attack i would think that it is not possible. Anybody know if it is actually possible to die of fright?

Yeah you gotta be in a pretty bad heart condition to be able to die of fright.. usually why you dont see people in their 70s checking out the new scary movies.

Well we had just heard an scary urban legend from one of our friends and it involved a girl dying of fright. Not saying that the urban legend was true just kinda raised a good question.

Probably if your body experienced an extreme state of shock (enough to fuck up your heart) you'd probably die of fright. But you'd probably need a pre existing heart condition.

Smeh, I'm not a doctor.

Anythings possible, if you're scared to the extreme...then its very possible for your heart to stop.

There is a syndrome that little kids have, i forget what it is called, but i saw it on tv, A toddler was running amongst the house, and when she turned the corner, she was met by her mom. The toddler wasn't expecting anything to be there.

She was scared to death by her own mother.

Don't believe me?

IT WAS ON OPRAH!!!!!!!!!

fright itself doesnt scare you to death. like many things, there is a biological reaction that causes death to occur. most often when someone dies of "fright" it is because they are so startled, their heart ends up stopping. A normal, healthy individual this doesnt happen to, but someone with a heart condition this could happen to. Also the same when you piss yoruself cause you're scared or something. Your body reacts in ways in an effort to protect the vital organs...all a part of fight or flight

I dunno if stopping the heart counts as protecting vital organs

haha your heart speeds up inorder to increase the blood supply to the vital organs and muscles that your body can prepare for what might incounter. unfortunately, it goes too fast sometimes, or sometimes shit gets fucked up and it'll just stop....but the peeing thing was really what was meant for protecting the vital organs

LMFAO! :)

yeh I deffinately agree that it's possible to become so alarmed / excited that your heart beats fast enough to cause failure. I entered a state known as "hyper-vigelance" once at night a few years back (long story) where my pulse got over 200 beats/minute, and I'd imagine if you proceeded into a stage past that, you'd probably be looking at a heart attack. Yeh, people have deffinately been "scared to death" many a time.

What about those people that died watching The passion of The Christ in the movie theaters? What do you think caused that?

yes, it's literally and scientifically possible. They had a CSI episode where a TV show pretended to throw a guy out of a helicopter blindfolded with his hands tied for X amount of money. The guy thought they were several hundred feet up, but they were only about 6 feet off the ground. He died. I thought it was bullshit and looked up all this information on it. My doctor friend told me it's like having a kind fo seizure where your brain just shuts down functions or something like that and your heart just stops beating. He said it was easy to remedy, and some people actually just snap out of it. Like the people that are pronounced dead at the scene of a car accident then wake back up in the ambulance and shit...

Actually, when you get scared really bad, your heart stops for a split second.

One case is this guy was driving down the road and some kids on an overpass threw a water balloon at his car. He wasn't expecting it and when it hit the windshield he was scared to death.

Awesome. This thread has provided me with a new excuse next time I'm running late for work.

"Yeah sorry Im late... I was so scared I wouldn't be on time that my heart stopped. I snapped out of it about 30 minutes later. And when I snapped out of it I was naturally stoned... yeah."

 nice excuse.
I read somewhere that people who jump off buildings die before they hit the ground. Don't ask me how they figured that shit out.
What happened at Passion Of The Christ? I want to hear about that.

thats called a heart attack. Which doesn't provide an answer to the imposed question. What we really wanna know is if you can die of fright like the people in The Ring.

Or shock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock). It can be caused by any mentally or physically traumatic event, and it can be fatal, so yes it is possible to die of fright.

Yes...

In sleep if you fall off something high and you dont wake up in time you can die of extreme shock (very rare).

But you cant die of a gunshot if nothing gets damaged, right? so the firecracker is the bullet, and the heartattack is the shotwound
