K&N filter

I see around the forum ppl telling others to drop in a K&N into thier truck but what I dont see is someone who actually did and came back to give us the results.I have a 94 sonoma and was thinking of buying 1 but these things arent cheap here and would like to know of what kind of gains,if any,someone with a similiar truck may have had gas milage,power increase,...ect.

2.do you mean just the filter, or the entire intake?
3. if you go with the entire intake you'll need a new exhaust. This is needed because you are sucking in a LOT more air, and it needs to exit your engine.
I went with the entire intake, and Ravin z55 exhaust. I noticed a increase of about 4MPG. There was some increase in power, but mainly at top end (just before you shift). I live at 5500ft so, pulling i the extra air, really made a difference. also checkout the S-10 fourm. theres a lot more traffic going on there to help with questions.

I put just the filter in my 99 burb and my 90 gmc pickup. Both have the 5.7 and I seen about 2mpg diffenance in the city and about 4 mpg on the highway.

yeah I just meant the filter only..I have a 94 sonoma with the 4.3 5 speed and I was wondering if the filter was worth the $65+tax.If I could get 4mpg extra then it would be worth it for me as I do alot of driving.

I've heard that the filters make a difference too. I'd definitely say that yes, its worth the extra $$.

Not sure if they make a difference on the V-6 or not but on the 2.2L it was a waste of money. If you go to the K&N filter site, they have all these testimonials which must be employees who were told to fill them out. I'm not saying it hurt my engine, it just didn't make a bit of difference. There was no powerful sound coming from under the hood, there was no rush of power in the acceleration, and there was no gas mileage increase; there was simply nothing at all except the bill for the intake system.

I have no interest either way if any one believes me, I thought I'd just put forth my experience. I was getting 450 miles to the tank before I put it on and I still get the same. One good thing about the intake system, it dresses up the underneath of the hood. All show and no go though.....Lee

450 miles on a tank isn't bad at all. how many gallons were you using? getsum, where do you live? if you're at a lower altitude, you're probably sucking all the air the engine can handle already. on my 2.2 i can get 260 miles out of 15 gallons. I live in Aurora, Colo. 5500ft elevation. I can hear this thing sucking air better than my Hoover. I'll try to get some recordings soon.

well I dont notice any power increase either,as for milage I havent had it in long enough to notice.found the filter on sale for $37 so its not so bad may save that much in replacing the filters over time.

Just dropping one in may not make much difference.
On the newer models with the maf sensors go easy on the oil.

I would be cautious about installing a K&N if you live in a dusty areas, these filters can let more dirt through than the stock paper variety and you could shorten the life of the top end of your engine. A natural consequence of a filter that lets more air flow through is that it is also more likely to let fine particulates through. If you do use one of these filters, oil and clean it religeously.

Im sure it doesnt hurt, but is it really needed? its reccomended because you are sucking in much more air than you normally would. the new exhaust system will allow the back pressure in the engine to be lessened.

it depends on what you are willing to spend, and whether or not you want to DIY or havea shop do it. A lot of people seem to like flowmaster for a true dual exhaust. Gibson's a great product but quite pricey. one that a bunch of people on this forum reccomended was Ravin. < its no longer around but Vortex is being sold instead. the main thing is that there isn't a lot of baffling, which is what restricts the flow of air outwards. if you have the money, go with a CAT-BACK that was everything is done at one time.

I don't recommend K&N air filters. I had a friend put one in on an older Jeep Cherokee. About 2k miles later he pulled the intake and found a lot of fine dust inside it. He immediately switched back to the regular filter. Gas mileage, HP, whatever benefits you get definitely do not outweigh the drawbacks (having to rebuild an engine). I got my 02 and found the K&N filter in the stock intake. I took it out. Anyone want it? Louie

Not sure if this vehicle has a mass airflow sensor or not, but if it does, DO NOT install a K&N air filter. The oil on the filter contaminates the sensor and coats it, causing a false reading. Most of the time, it takes quite a bit of time to burn off the excess oil still left in the air intake even after you replace the sensor. They usually aint cheap so before you go buying one, I'd see if your vehicle has a mass airflow sensor.
