grinding...

well this has been happening on and off for a while but tonight was the worst so far. It randomly starts to do this sometimes. Tonight i left and all was fine then I went to sheetz, when i went to leave it didnt want to go into reverse very easily, or any other gear. I kinda had to force it into gear or put it into it super softly...and 3rd sometimes grinds, 3rd also does this "double click" thing(dont know how to explain it) Why would it be doing this?

could be your synchros or blocking rings

im really hoping its not the syncros but what are the blocking rings??

they are in the tranny with the synchros. they really aren't all that expensive to replace, if you can find a mechanic friend that doesn't rape on the labor.

i would get it checked out ASAP, my girlfriends trans just took a dive two weeks ago and those were the symptoms, it was a '93 SL, she needed a full rebuild...$$$

before you freak out about a potential internal transmission problem, you might check the clutch and the slave cylinder first...more common problems. if the slave cylinder is gone or is about to go, then it will be hard to get into gear sometimes.

how would one go about checking these things?

well The more I look into this it seems like its the slave cylinder, so I think im gonna replace it...I looked up how to do it and it doesnt seem all that hard but any tips from people would be appreciated. Also a friend of mines uncle owns a transmission shop/clutch shop so if it goes down hill i should be getting a goo deal

damnit... I just had about posted the directions to replace the MASTER cylinder... then I caught myself... anyway... here's how to do it...

look on the back of the transmission (close to the firewall)... there will be the slave cylinder... simply use flare nut wrenches (10 mm) to unbolt the lines... there'll be two bolts holding the cylinder to the transmission... unbolt... put the new cylinder back into it's place... (first u gotta insert the piston)... bolt it back on... then reconnect the hydraulic lines... then bleed... presto...

(oh yeah, I assumed that you already removed the intake piping, or the cold air intake)...

oh yeah, whatever u do... Make sure you don't let any brake fluid get on painted surfaces... or at least clean it ASAP... or your paint will peel... I've made that mistake before...

to replace the slave cylinder is quite simple, as Mikelb explained up above. when i dropped my transmission, i had to partially remove the slave cylinder, and the one difficult part about it was getting a 10mm wrench into the small space to remove/reinstall the bolts holding it on.

other than that, it shouldn't be too time consuming. maybe take you an hour tops. just make sure to put more fluid back in the system when your done and BLEED it. you'll need a second hand to help you bleed the clutch. follow direction on stealth316.com.

well when i got home from school today I checked my clutch fluid level, couldnt even see any fluid what so ever, so it was obviously really low, so I added some (took a good bit) and started her up, now i cant get in gear what so ever. Do i need to bleed my clutch to get it flowing right??
I think that was my problem, i wanted to do it when i got off work...but i didnt get off til 12:30 so im doing it really really early because i have to be back at work at 8 am

Bleeding the clutch would be a very good way to go!!

Take ya time doing it ie.don't rush. and remember to keep topping the resiviour up every so often or you'll have to start all over again!

if you were that low on fluid then you must have a leak. Check under the hood and underneath the car for leaks. My guess is it will be leaking under the slave cylinder which is on the tranny. You will be able to shift for a while but you will lose fluid again and again you will have the same problem.

As they have said... you sound as though you have a leak... though it may be small to begin with... it will get worse... Go ahead and look for that leak, check underneath your dash as well, the master cylinder may be leaking... the hoses as well, I wish you luck

i got it running sat morning but i am still going to replace the slave cylinder and upgrade to stainless steel braided clutch line, thats in about 3 weeks though

That's cool, glad to hear that it's running again... yeah that'll be a nice upgrade... wonder how long they're supposed to last (prolly life of car, but Idk for sure)
