Hate to bring it back up (pulley)

ok,
I bought a lightweight pulley off of ebay,

I've read the past dicussions about this subject & all they was,was arguments about will it hurt the engine or not,I've read websites that says it won't & websites that says it will hurt the engine,
I'm just wanting to know has anyone put a lightweight pulley on their civic?
(been driving no problems....)

I dont have AC,P/S,ext...(or a bumping system)
I know too much about hondas to be asking this question,
althou I truly believe that it won't hurt anything,~~as with the honda engines or only internally balanced~~and so on....
but this don't have to be a big thread or nothing,just a quick answer,
is it ok or not?

It can do damage, especially on higher hp engines. My friend is getting rid of his for that very reason. His oil pump went to crap and the thrust washers fell out as well, and he believes it's from the aftermarket crank pulley; though he's not completely sure on that (don't want to make it sound like that is definently the issue). A lot of people use them on their stock engines (with basic bolt-ons) and don't have any problems, while others do. Could be fine, could be really bad.

as far as i know, no personal experience here, that it would be fine to have up to 300whp or so, after that you should ditch it because a guy putting out 400whp or so put one on and he spun all his bearings after that.

No damage to either of my engines (b16 in a CRX and h22 in a Lude), I've got lightweight pulleys on both. Seems to me the people who complain about damage always have some other mods done to their engines and they don't know what caused the problem so they blame the pulley.

From personal experience I say this:

If you do the mod correctly you won't have a problem. It's the other mods done incorrectly that cause problems.

thats all I had to hear,I have this Honda/Acura High Performance book,
it says:

(Since Honda engines are internally balanced,the harmonic balancer is not as critical for engine longevity as an american V-8 and we have not heard of any problems even in long-term racing use)

them is the exact words out of the book,I just wondered if anyone has used one & everything has went fine,but I guess it has,
its just if somone would have used one & the motor would have went out of balance,it would be a different story,
I would trust a honda book before I would a bunch of people.
honda engines arent expensive even if I do mess it up & when I put one on,I'll reply back to this thread tell how everything went/goes.

Im guessing you guys dont ever pay attention to this: A damper is NOT a balancer; theyre completely different. People put dampers on completely balanced engines because there's another factor: torsional vibration. a completely balanced motor does not address this problem, thats where a damper comes in.

You trust a "Honda" book that isnt even written by Honda? I prefer problems solved by "scientific" evidence, not just believing something because someone thats "higher up" says it...

I say its your motor, do whatever you want. People have problems with them, others have not. Use them at your own risk.

Not worth the risk if u ask me... Just because it is so controversial... But in all honesty, is it worth it too u to gain what 3 HP?? Too me its not...

I can tell u this much, I wouldnt have bought it unless it was a brand name... Auction dosnt say what it is... Only ones I would ever think about is an Unorthodox or AEM... Plus the auction says its for a CRX AND 92-95 Civic/Del Sol, well thats pretty inaccurate... Its for one or the other not both (looks like a CRX since theres not a 3rd tier for the power steering belt)... The 92-95s have power steering on most models, plus the alt belt has 3 ribs, on the CRXs theres only 2 ribs... Itll still work (im using a 2 rib belt on my 3 rib pulley), but still with inaccurate info like that, I wouldnt buy it...

Something to keep in mind:

When I took my crank pulley off to replace it with the N1 pulley, they were both the same inside. Neither had rubber inside, so I think it's a lot of old information.

its only 20.00,if 20 bucks is a big deal to spend then I would of had second thoughts and I have a 92 motor in my car,
but if it was for a 91 which it is,by the way the other pulleys look on ebay,the 92-95's have the p/s like you said & the 88-91 has 2,for a/c & alt,I have both alt's (88-91 & 92-95),so I'll see what the deal is when it gets here.

Your thinking of the intial cost... Since the seller didnt list a name brand, means its probably generic, OBX or some other off brand... Usually I would say its fine to go cheap, but with a part that has to be so precise in how its balanced, this particular part I would most definatley not cheap out on... If its even 1 ounce off, your whole engine is kaput...

yeah, with the harmonic balancer... not all honda engines have them. The DX ad STDs have a 2 Lb. pulley on them with no balancer, the Si has a 7 lber with one. my D16a Vtec came with about a 5 lber no balancer.

And my Unorthodox pulley weights in at less than a pound.

Unorthodox Racing Pulley weighs less than a lb. and I've had it on my d16a6 with matching Alternator pulley for 3 years now. It works fine.
