I haven't heard very much about these, but they are advertised as producing as much as 47% more airflow and 10-23 RWHP. Are they a good idea and has anyone else heard much about them, good or bad?

Pretty much all I have heard was they cause problems and don't deal with our PCM's all that well. I would just descreen (be very careful if you do this) your current one and call it a day

I descreened the MAF in my 96 blazer a while back (It had a 4300 vortec V6), and I can honestly say that I didn't really notice any significant improvement. I noticed some quicker acceleration when I installed my cold air intake, though. If you haven't done that already, you should. It is a wise choice. You can get a decent one on ebay for about 30 bucks, maybe even less than that.

A larger MAF won't do squat for a stock engine, the stock MAF will flow more air than the engine could possibly use.

a friend has one (got it for cheap, like 50 bucks) on his 97 z and has no complaints

I just thought I'd ask because the advertised gains obviously struck my curiosity. You can check it out here:
The first one is 85mm and not all-50-state legal while the other is. I don't exactly know the difference between them, but one is cheaper than the other. Maybe the second one is smaller in diameter.

I know on LS1 cars you can actually lose power going to the larger MAF without tuning for it.

Well, I'm glad I asked about this. Its just a plug-and-play installation. I didn't realize it could get complicated. I don't have anything to tune with and I'm short on money due to holidays. God, I hate and love my car.
