If you don't have a sufficient strength of antifreeze in your coolant, it might have frozen solid somewhere, which could have caused those symptoms.
If it's frozen solid, it can't flow and cool properly, and it also can't flow to the heater core to provide heat. Maybe a passageway got melted through the frozen part just enough to let the melted hot antifreeze boil out the overflow.

If it froze up you have to defrost it to see if you have any damage. Usually a day or so in a garage out of the elements does it. Look for popped freeze-out plugs on the block and possibly split radiator or heater core. Check the fan belt and all hoses, heater and radiator.
If nothing is obvious, check your coolant level and concentration, one of those Prestone testers is pretty inexpensive and accurate. Pour in a 50/50 antifreeze mix if the coolant is low and start it up. Check for leaks as it warms up, watch the gage too. If all is well add more antifreeze until full.

In addition to what everyone else has already said, check your thermostat, it could be stuck closed also.
