Hey guys, I have a 1997 mercury tracer ls (identiclal to escort) 2.0 SOHC. One day my emergency brake light came on and stayed on for a few months. Then for a month or so it stopped, now its back and I was wondering if you know what I could do to fix this. Trust me I've checked to make sure the brake is off plenty of times. Any help would be greaty appreciated.

That light can also mean your brake master cylinder is low......

hmm, you mean the brake fluid? I replaced the master cylinder a few months ago.

Yes, he means the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. If it is low, the light comes on.
Normally, you don't have to add brake fluid (provided no leak). It gets low because your disc pads are wearing thin. Install new thick pads and the level goes back up because the caliper moves away from rotor.

I checked the brake fluid level and it is barely above the minimum line. I was thinking to add more when I get home but my brakes started squeeking so I thought I should check the pads. But the squeeking comes and goes, its really weird. Along time ago, (I don't remember how long ago) the brakes were squeeking pretty bad, or what I thought to be the brakes, but the pads were still really thick. Oh well, ill just check the pads and check for leaks.

So, fill it up and let us know. Don't let it get too low or you'll get air in your lines.

YES!! I added some brake fluid and its gone. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Man that has been bugging me for 6 months, I was about to just wait for the light to burn out, lol. Never again will I have a passanger tell me, "OH MY GOD, you left your parking brake on!" then have to respond with, oh, its always like that. Thanks for the help. I feel like a million bucks

Good Deal :loser:
You should have told your passengers that the car didn't have any brakes and that's what the light was for :icon16:
