lately when i try to start my car, i turn the key and it grabs the engine it rolls over once, maybe twice.. then the starter will just start spinning on its own...... then if i try it again the starter will just spin without the engine and everynow and then it will barely grab the engine..then the next day it will do the same thing..grab a little then just spin .....it aint a thing that got progressively (sp?) worse.. it just started happening....My dad said it sounds like the solenoid but he is not sure...i took the starter off and the gear looked ok..a little worn but pretty good..i took the solenoid off and the bendix (sp?) worked when i pulled on it with my hand......any ideas?

sounds like the hold in windings are bad.
replace the starter motor and solenoid as a unit.

replace the starter motor and solenoid as a unit.
Unless you have a freakish setup iwth a remotely mounted solenoid like on a ford, why wouldn't you replace the whole thing? Did you check the price of the solenoid out versus a rebuilt starter with a solenoid already on it?
