Swapping a 5.7 for a 5.0

I have a 1996 Z71 with a 5.0L, and with an engine rebuild coming, just wondering if a swap is reasonable.....is it as simple as it may seem??? Just curious, seems like you install a 5.7 long block, and re-program the ECM....Anyone?

dont know about newer trucks for sure, but older ones were as simple as taking out the old engine and putting the new one right in the same place, as long as it is a smallblock from the same casting type and whatnot (i think the old ones have 2 piece rear main seals and the new ones have 1 piece ones)

the comp prolly needs to be tampered with to get the slightly higher fuel amounts a 350 will need. prolly not to hard if you are sticking with a stock 350, not a racing cam and high stall speed converter with racing cylinder heads and the works lol. a carburetor may be all that can cure that headache lmao

by the way, you can get a 4 bolt old school 2 piece rear main seal engine completely new, including everything down to a newly made block. it is actually made by GM, so it is essentially the same engine they would put into a new truck back in the day. i dont know if you can put the old school type of rear seal in yours not, maybe the bolt holes for the tranny wont line up, prolly will tho... ask pepul at custom shops in your area if it would work. the whole engine costs 1300 bucks with free shipping at jegs.com lol i thought they must be kidding me, but its the actual price...i doubt you would get a vortec engine for that price tho

If you have a Vortec 5.0, keep the heads for the 350.

Just curious, seems like you install a 5.7 long block, and re-program the ECM....Anyone? kworkman97: ive been thinking about doing the same thing with my 89 1500. i have a 350 small block punched to a 383 stroker. any way i was talking to the guys at the local gm garage about putting the late module tpi heads and intake onto the carberated block and they said everything should bolt up ok but id probly get into trouble with the timing, and the the lack of fuel. a freind of minesaid the fuel and timing problems could be fixed by having a chip burnt with the differnt engine peramiters. or by replacing the stock distributer with an hei type availible from mallory. and with my application with the throttle body and fuel injectors off a 454 would give me plenty of fuel and that all important air. well i hope this infos of some help to you. have a merry x-mas and a happy new year
