I have been working on my jetta trying to get the check engine light to go off. The code p0501 which is the vehicle speed sensor Range/Performance, code is still on, I have changed the sensor on the top of the transmission, cleaned off all of the connectors I could reach on the computers, and checked all the grounds under my battery. Anyone have any helpful advice, I could sure use it, I am lost. Also is that the only sensor that could be causing the code?

It is a 99, with the new body style. 2.0. automatic transmission.

there are 2 other vss on the car.. the one you replaces (long thin one) on the diff is the speedometer only sensor. there are 2 other ones, one under the transmission mount, and one under the selector lever cable.

I hope you are right about this because it would save me a lot of trouble if I don't have to remove my transmission just to replace a small plastic wheel inside of it, but I called the dealers and they say they don't have any more vss on their computers, I have called a couple and none of them say there are other sensors? Is that possible, it is the newer body style for 99's.

AllData wasn't real clear on this when I checked ... Do all 3 of these VSS's affect the speedometer?

So far I've changed G22 and G38 on an 02 Jetta, 2.0 auto. I'm still getting code P0501 and have speedo or odometer. I can't get my hands on a G68 today so it's gonna have to wait until during the week.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can chime in and help on this.

Bump ... I've changed all 3 sensors and still no speedo or odometer. Still getting P0501 as well.

I have a 96 Jetta GLS with a 2.0 manual trans with the same code p0501 coming up the speedo will work than not work and then work and not work cant exactly figure out why. does anyone know if this is a electric speedo and therefore need to replace a sensor or value or if this is a manual speedo and need to replace cable and gear. Also the car has three other codes p0171 p0510 p0440 and if anyone else knows what these codes can mean please let me know. I have to get this card smogged and it will fail for sure and i really dont want to have to pay to get it fixed by dealer or independent shop right now.

thanks
Nick

hello i have the same problem.... i have a 1997 jetta GL 5-speed and i have a code "p0501" wich reads "vehicle speed sensor Range/Performance" on the manual. now i purchased a brandnew OEM VSS. after thati erased the code and and when i started the car the speedo needle twitched and went back to zero(before it did not move at all when i start the car) so i assumed it work. so i test drove it but the speedometer didnt work. i checked obdII again and it read p0501 pending, 4 inc, 4 ready. anyone can help me out? i am totally lost now.. im thinking of replacing my cluster. but im not sure anymore if this will just be another waste of time.

i was also thinking if the VSS for manual transmission and automatic transmission are different. i did not specify it from the dealer and they didnt ask me either

:headshakeoh, before i replaced the VSS the symptoms i was getting besides the code and the check engine light was that the speedometer would work half the time and stop when i hit a bump or brake a bit harder... im not sure of this observation but thats what i think.. the cruise control doesnt work.. i havent check now if it works after i replaced the vss.. ill see once i get to the freeway.

help please
