Apparently the noise I have heard over the last month when initially starting my 97 sub is the flywheel is making contact with the starter housing. I took the starter off and there is obvious signs of friction on the starter housing near the shaft of the starter. Spun the flywheel 360 deg. and yep it is warrped in one spot. What could have caused this ? Do I need to have a new flywheel put in ??

It may be stessed cracked at the bolt holes. You should really remove it and inspect it. If it is cracked, then I would replace it.
