Shocks

My wife drove the car last week and said she heard a loud pop from what sounded like the front right wheel. Could this have been the shock? There seems to be sort of a rattle now when we hit a sharp bump. Took the wheel off, couldn't find anything but an oil leak not coming from the filter, but behind what the filter screws into. Is that it's own little unit? Can that be replaced? Any help is greatly appreciated.

My wife drove the car last week...

Maybe it was neighbors cat? That will be a shock...

Seriously, if shock is shot, quite often u will not see anythin. A car corner with bad shock doesnt feel stiff when pushed forcefully downwards, no jumping allowed. If worn out, will be noisy in potholes. Also, anyone not adequately tight strut bolt, will cause noise.

Shocks have to be replaced or thrown away every 60k miles. Not practical keep 'em dangling dry in the wind...

Free play between suspension parts/bushings cannot be seen, but problem may become visible if bending parts with a crowbar, wheel off.

Dont know wassup, give us pics please. Never seen a filter after wheel drop... Basic info pls ?? "the" car.

It's an '02 maxima. After the wheel comes off there is a cover that you can remove to get to the oil filter. Also noticed my belts need to be replaced. I'm thinking we'll just have everything done at the shop. It's our main transportation, so best to get it done by a professional. Thanks for the help.

... belts need to be replaced. ...

As said, miles kill the shocks (no info?). To keep any car handling safe, replace all every 60kmiles... Professionals are good if u can find em. A shop is warranty only for billing: Ask diff shops for shock quotation, stealer$hip price 'will be 4x'. ...Oil filter: replaced from below.

DIY service is best.

About 'the' cat: I've asked my wife plz do stop reporting u feelins behind wheelins... =nowadays sleep better, less wheel inpection ecercises.
