I had just replaced the head gasket on my 90 jetta (1.8 l). everything was hooked up and when I turned it over the car started right away, it idled fine but had a heavy smell of fuel, when I went to give it some gas the engine bogged down and died, now it will turn over but won't start. I have spark and fuel. ???Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have spark and fuel delivery, the problem seems that I am getting too much fuel as the smell of gas is there when turning the engine over, it will after turning over for a while start but then stall right away. the timing was'nt touched so I figure that is correct still.

I don't see how you could remove the cylinder head to replace the gasket without removing the timing belt. The tensioner pully may be loose and the belt could have slipped a couple notches. Another possibility is that the cam shaft timing is off by 180 degrees.
