My 92 explorer 4x4 system isn't working right! when i push the 4 high button it kicks into gear, but then keeps kicking right back out again. Makes a terrible sound, push button to go back to 2 wh drive then normal. Its like it'll stay in 4 wh maybe only a couple seconds then kick out then kick back in again. Any help out there, its runs good, but it's not worth putting to much money into the truck, it has 187,000 on it!

Well, first off, were do you live? Is it in an area that you NEED the 4x4? It sounds like maybe the shift motor may not be engaging the T-case completely. With a manuel, you might be able to change it out yourself. 187K! Thats impressive, I knew Jeeps were good for 300K (4.0). If the EX is still in good shape, and the engine is still running well, I would get the T-case repaired, or if you own it outright, maybe lookinto getting a T-case that has the shifter on it and install it, versus the electronitc shift. ( its done in the bronco II's due to bad electronics) I believe it will bolt right up to the tranny with out any mods, except the floor access. If you have a manuel tranny or floor shifter than your in luck.

my 92 doesn't even engage. i have heard a lot obout the push buttons going bad, thats about $50 to replace. i have also heard that the moter that engages the 4x4 could be bad, thats about $300-$500. but it sounds like your buttons have a short or something in them. so i would replace those first and if that doesnt work try finding the moter in a junk yard, if you trust it.
