I'm doin a 70 Olds on commision.
Here's my rough pencil which I'll use as a template in Illustrator.
http://www.58vw.com/af/lecar1.jpg
The image is about 15 inches long so I scanned it in 2 chunks and put'em together in Photoshop. I see a lot that I'll correct in Illustrator but I'm reasonably pleased with the template.

See the mis-alignment? I was lazy...Illustrator allows me to be that way. The gap on the tire is there because I didn't remove the tape off my light table and when I tranfered this from my really-really rough...well
nice try though

What a great "rough" sketch.
What's the body color? Any stripes?
What's the body color? Any stripes?
lemorris
12-11-2005, 02:54 PM
it's actually a Cutlass so the body is blue the top is white and there's no stripes...bummer.
The wheels have the body blue color though.
I did my initial rough rough sketch then transferred it. On the transfer I did the body first. then I scanned in the wheels and blew them up about 115% Then I printed them out alone. then I transferred the new large wheels onto my drawing. I lowered the body a little too just to get a better stance.
came out well.

I'll post some of the reference in a bit.
The customer on this one gave me some clues during the photo shoot. She told me what parts of the car her husband loved. She talked about the long line down the side so I made sure to deviate a bit from the reference and add some emphasis to that area. I alos made the wheels larger and added some funk to the rims. In general even if I am working from a photo I end up stylizing so much that it turns into an entirely different thing.
I transfered this one 3 times to get to this point, and after it comes out of Illustrator it will be further removed from the reference.
The ability to freehand came through imitation for me so at this point I can pretty much go either way with similar results in time and finished piece.

in that sense we all did
by drawing what I saw I learned..by going over rim after rim after rim I learned.
there is no shortcut to draughtsmanship
I used to draw Disney characters all the time just to learn...same thing with cars.
The apprentices to the masters who went on to become masters learned the same way
it just is
I'm 20 years deep in it now and I'm still learning

well...if I freehand a rough sketch and then redraw it on the computer. Is it no longer a hand drawn piece of art?
If I piece together an image from several different reference sources and make mods to parts of those images is it original?
If I place a piece of paper over anything that I have drawn to any degree on my light table and trace my own "original" or composited work have I ruined the integrity of the piece?
Was it ever a "piece" to begin with?
If my art has been influenced in any way by another artist am I not being true to my own individual spirit and therefore creating forgeries?
nawwwwwww....lolol
it's all good!
There's so much art and the pie is sooooo huge. The love is truly in the pursuit. I find my self between the lines. I read into my work and I find myself. Your growth as an artist isn't measurable. You never do your "best work ever". If you do...you're dead. It's the thrilling, yet tragic reality that we will never do our best that drives us. IMO
think about it.....have you done your best piece?
when's the funeral?
lol
hey...here's one...ask someone who knows nothing about drawing to trace a car.....

If you mean I don't post any drawings, no, I don't. I also, don't have a USB transferable camea (slot is fcuked), nor a scanner. And the ones I do go through the trouble of posting using a card reader that's slow as hell are usually half done because I finish them and give them away/sell them before I take a picture. Sooooo....
The OFFICIAL GET HONUE A GOD DAMNED SCANNER fund is at: $0.00

Lemo.. You are sooo right! We never do "best work ever," although sometimes we have done our "best work to date..." always leaving open the door of learning and experience (yours or others). I learned long ago that like in life, It's the journey, not the destination, that makes us keep trying. The Latin phrase, "De gustibus non desputandum est" (General translation is, In matters of taste (art, etc), there is no dispute... Art is subjective, not objective. SO, enjoy the process, learning and joy it brings... Robo

Oh, hell, re reading it I see it was a misplaced Comma. Changed the whole sentance. Sorry, my bad. Unless you still wanna donate! Lol. I agree, everyone you do is just going to top your "best" because you've taken what you already knew from the previous drawing and learned something in the process of this drawing that makes it that much better, so you have a new best. Funny. Trippy, but funny.

That's my main point.
How you got there isn't the issue. The knowledge that you've armed yourself with as you go into your next drawing is.
I once drew a drawing of Honore Daumier's becuase I love his work. His work with charcoal in his value studies is some of the most amazing stuff I've ever seen. Second only to George Seurat IMO. I was working graveyard shifts at a Circle K and spent the entire night trying to be Honore Daumier. My rendering was far from his from a technical standpoint but by tracing then imitating what I saw I learned more about value than I had known before. I then turn around and tried to apply those value lessons to a Mazda pick-up. The body sucked butt but I got form on the wheels far beyond where I had gotten before. The same value tricks that I learned that night I apply to this day when I render a tire. I have done it thousands of times and I have a feel for the rubber that fits me and my style perspective.
My daughter traced pictures of anything she could find, sponge bob, bugs bunny, rug rats...for years. Her skill level now in her Manga/Anime art is outright scary. She has 1 scholarship offer on the table and it looks like there will be more to come. She has aspirations of studying in Japan and I wouldn't bet against her. By tracing and then imitating what she saw she was able to develop an understanding about what was happening within the pictures or natural surroundings she was seeing. She is 13.
I copied and imitated George Trosley's work countless times. My work looks nothing like his now but through his line I was able to find mine.
Do you see? The competitive stuff is useless. The who's better is moot. All that matters is finding yourself.
I didn't start drawing until I was almost 20. You have a 6 year jump on me. If you continue to practice and be patient the money you make will make my income look like "lint", and I'll be proud to say I knew you "when".

The reason i didn't do much beyond 17% is because this print is being framed with a royal blue matte. I figured there would be enough blue between the car and the matte so I went with more muted tones to give me some depth.

just like in a previous post I mentioned that.
Sometimes I don't center everything. Sometimes for an effect or a look I'll sacrifice what is real.
You'll also notice that the entire wheel is about 115% larger than it would be on a stock Cutlass. I actually lowered it by about 3 inches as well.
It's the same reason I like Bugs Bunny cartoons much more than I like the Anime stuff my daughter loves. I find character and emotion in flaws....it adds a human element.
Patty B (judge in the contest) once mentioned that my drawings had a hand type feel but she didn't know exactly why. It's because they're not perfect.
lol
ironic
