Transmission filter question

Hi, i have a 1995.5 passport, v6, auto, and i am going to change my tranny fluid soon. My last tranny fluid change was 34,000 ago and i changed my filter out as well. Since i do not have a drain plug, and i have to drop the pan anyway to get the fluid out, should i change the filter out too, or can i just take it out, clean it with brake cleaner, inspect it and put the same one back on, or should i just put a new one in. I heard most people with drain plugs just drain and refill it until its 80-90k before changing out their filter. So what should i do? Thank you all

Is using brake cleaner to clean it okay? I just heard it from a toyota mechanic when my friend was trying to buy a new ATF filter and he said just clean it out with brake cleaner and put it back on. The toyota filter look identical to my filter.

I just always buy a new filter. Under $20.00 with a gasket.

Also you can buy a drain kit which is basicall a hollow bolt with two nuts and orings.

I replace it every 30K. Overkill? Maybe. But I sleep better. How much is a rebuild?

I must admit, I have never changed the ATF filter in 150k miles. I have however, had full transmission flushes done every 25-30k miles; filter was removed, inspected, and cleaned at 73k miles.

I spoke to an Isuzu tech at a dealership on Broadway, he stated that every 25k full fluid change-outs, or 15k partial fluid change-outs were all that was needed, and that they rarely ever change out the filters.

Mentioned the only time they change the filter is if the owner came in with high mileage and had never serviced tranny.

If you go thru all the motions of pulling the filter, might as well bolt a new on in place rather then clean the old one.
