1992 firebird convertible 3.1 ltr v6
i want to put my 1991 chevy caprice (police package) 350 v8 in it.
i was poking around under the hood. i see the holes for a v8 motor mount and several other plugs just hanging around, not being used on the wiring harness. is it possible that the harness used is a generic one that would accompany both a v8 engine and a v6, depending on which one is installed-- per package details.
i have the original wire harness out of the caprice--w/ computer, etc--100% complete. but it would be nice just to have to unplug the old computer and engine--to plug in the new stuff.
am i feeling lucky?

I doubt it, it is probably just for other options/accessories that the V6 could be equipped with. However, since you have the other harness there, compare the two and see if they look the same under the hood compared to whats in there just hanging around.

Complete different computers, and complete different harness'. Would require a ton of work to do the swap. The engine will fit into the Firebird fine, but you're talking about alot more than just a basic engine swap. You would need a ton of other upgrades on the body as well.. which happens to be a pretty hefty list that I'm really too lazy to type out at the moment. Plus, I can't really think of then all off the top of my head. I think www.thirgen.org has alot of info on it. Not sure if the tranny out of the Caprice will fit into the Firebird either. Best to do some research on it, unless you get lucky and someone comes along who knows all the details on the swap. But all I can tell ya is that the 350 will fit fine in the Firebird, but you would need to swap out the wiring harness' and computer as well. Good luck with it and hope you can find some more info.

Most people who do the V8 swap install a carburated engine, or they are just swapping the 305 for the 350 which is an easy swap.

the 350 should fit...for a little while, the 3.1L tranny will be able to handle the power of it..until it blows! hahaha :D

rule of thumb- the newer the car, the more complicated the swap. This is because the sophistication and complexity of wiring and computer controls/ sensors, etc increases with the newer cars. (It's not impossible, it just gets more complicated, espeically if you don't know what you're doing)
If you're considering a 4th gen car. get the V-8 model. Spend the extra 2 grand upfront and save it later on and more, plus headaches and time later on by buying it up front.
and get the 6 speed while you're at it. If you're going to get an LT1 car, I reccomend a '95 or newer. They have the vented optispark distributor, plus, with the Trans Am you don't have to worry about finding a "GT" model (1994 only) to get the 155 mph speedometer, T/A spoiler and a few otherwise standard details.
The 1993 models had a "speed density" system that isn't as receptive to performance gains as the '94 and newer "mass air flow". Avoid it if you can.
Again, these earlier cars aren't impossible, but it's one more hurdle/ expense you can avoid upfront by careful shopping.
Good luck!

well i was thinking i could pick up the speedometer from a salvage mart here or something because i know the higher speeds were on the 95+ models and i think they should fit no problem in the 94 cluster.
I was just curious if the lt1 would bolt in fine because it's hard to find firebirds here for sale for the price i'm being offered (2k)
