Strange Alarm Problems??

I have a 2000 GXE with the factory alarm system. The alarm will go off occasionally for no reason, like it will just be sitting in the driveway and suddenly go off. The hood was slightly tweaked in an accident before I got it, so it doesn't close perfectly tight. I took it to a Nissan dealer and they told me that the hood not closing tight was causing the problem. My question is, does this sound like it could be the source of my problem - and can I just unhook the factory alarm somehow without screwing anything else up??

there's a switch under the hood right in front of the battery,
try to press it down so the alarm "thought" the hood is closed.
