Hey guys, i searched through the past files, and couldn't really find what i was looking for on this topic...i'm from Hamilton, Ontario, and the couple hobby stores that i have been to don't carry the compound, and the wax....is there any alternative hardware store or anything that i would be able to get these? if so, which would be the best brand or types to get...Thanks alot guys, take care

Look for Meguires products, seems to do the job well, as for wax look for anything with Carnauba wax in the ingredients. The Treatment Model wax has Carnauba wax in it and that stuff is fantastic. Before you try it on a good kit use it on an old kit first, just to be on the safe side:banghead:

Automotive products will work well only if you paint with automotive paints or work with lacquers. Most automotive products will not work on enamels or acrylics. Carnauba for paint protection, and absolutely no necessary on the model - you need a wax that lightly polishes and shines paint up.
Novus polish system is really good.

Hey I am from Ontario too! Do you mind driving to Mississauga? (May not be a good idea today with this kind of weather...) North Star hobbies should have the polishing compound in stock. Not sure about polishing wax though...Most Hobby stores here don't carry the wax I find...

Be VERY careful of automotive stuff. Many of them have chemicals that will soften your paint and take the shine away if you aren't careful. Many Meguiars products are too harsh.
However, search for "Meguiars Scratch X" and see what you find. Many of us ACME guys have bought tubes of Scratch X at Wal Mart/Target and it's great for polishing paint jobs without chemically softening the paint, it polishes via friction alone. It usually works as well/better than Tamiya compound. I rarely wax models; they don't sit out in the rain or sun or snow so they stay nice and shiny once polished.

so pretty much, if you model isn't getting wet and that, it doesn't really need to be waxed? like it doesn't have much of a difference in look?

Couldn't agree more. Stay away from Automotive polish unless you have painted your car with "Real" automotive Lacquer paints.
I used Automotive polish once on TS spray. Never again. It did damage the paint, it went all tacky and very soft. Was not a great idea.
Wax on the other hand is great for removing water marks from decals, little bits of loose paint from panel lines when you drop water based ink into the recess to make black panel lines or whatever and it's still a protective layer on your paintjob..
OK, I agree its not like it's going to be subjected to weather, sun, cold etc, but its protection none the less.. Plus it feels so smooth afterwards.. Hmm.. I need to get a life..!!

Pure carnauba wax should do the trick. I've got a whole draw full of fancy polishing compounds and more often than not regular carnauba wax is as effective as anything. Smells good too!
With the caveat that we're talking about lacquers here like Tamiya or GSI Creos. Enamels and acrylics should be okay too but make sure you check first by testing on some non valuable scrap.

I use 3M products. I use either 3M rubbing compound or 3M microfinish. But I typically use lacquer paints. I follow with meguiars or zymol automotive wax. I too have noticed the smoother finish, and Its just the method that I have always used. I notice a difference....but It could just be my mind playing tricks on me

Seriously, you've been given excellent advice and warnings about auto polishes and recommendations for you to try (auto products that won't kill your paint), there are plenty of tutorials in the FAQ's, yet you're now about to go against everyone's suggestions and try the world's strongest and most caustic product ever invented for paint. It's too strong for any modern paint finishes on real cars, but I guess since you decided you want to try it I won't attempt to talk you out of it at this point. We try, we really do, but it seems all for naught at times.

**Shaking head**
I already mentioned not to use automotive compounds etc.. I know what it does, I’ve tried it. In fact, my real car never gets turtle wax compound. I use clearcoat safe polishes and waxes on my real car. The ingredients of some polishes have suspended grits, and chemicals that break the surface down, to then cut into the paint to remove scratches and buff the surface. It’s like skimming, but only taking a very fine layer off. However newer paints are formulated differently, and react oddly with certain compounds.. they can cut too deep, melt the paint, even remove too much paint etc.
Just get on over to www.hlj.com and get some Tamiya compound. It works on all model paints, as it’s not as hard on the surface as the formulation is designed to work the same as automotive polish, but doesn’t cut as fast, or melt the paint.
This is why scratch X works, as it’s formulated to work with newer clearcoated automotive lacquers. Many that have older cars try scratch X and it does nothing, whereas on my nearly new car it works a treat for removing marks etc.. Cars 10 years or older tended to have harder base coats and no clear coats, and hence why stuff like T Cut (a VERY hard liquid abrasive) were devised.. Never use T CUT on a model, it will perhaps strip the paint off.. It’s that hard.

Sorry. Try communicating a bit more clearly next time. Your story changes, your typing skills are terrible. People will take you a lot more seriously here if you try just a bit harder to communicate properly. You'll get a lot more out of this place when people take you seriously.

"obviously gone and got some clear..." yes that is a really good structured sentence.(not to take offense mickbench, just an example) Who care about our spelling and how clear it is. From everything that i have been writing in my posts due to the spelling, if you can't read them you have to be pretty stupid. Even if you are English or British.

Proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation go along way in this day and age. I am a memeber of a board where, if you repost, they flame you to death. If you do not use proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, you will not get a single reply to your thread.
There have been numerous threads in this specific AF forum about post etiquette, regarding specifically, capitalization, spelling, and punctualization. Like many have said, we have NUMEROUS members on this board who speak english as a second, sometimes third or even fourth language, people from south america and asia for example. It is understandable when their english is not spot on. But the reason we stress the matter is for those people in particular. So that they may have an enjoyable experience.
We have tried to make this forum enjoyable and helpful to all who use it. That is why we ask so many questions on the specific products you are trying to use. So we don't give out poor information and recomendations. This forum was once a VERY enjoyable place. We didn't have any immature little kids running around and throwing threats, and getting upset whenever they would get advice they didn't use, or were warned against going against the tried and true methods. However, the sudden rush of Newbies has taken away from the enjoyable and easy going nature of the forum. They typically don't use the search feature or read the FAQ. And if they do, they don't search well enough, or take the time to go through the pages of results that are returned in the search.
So here is a recommendation for those of you who forgot your elementary and middle school english lessons. Type it in a word processing program, and press the spell/grammar check and see ALL of the ways that you have managed to butcher the english language (this applies to those who speak english as a first language). Then, copy and past the hundreds of corrections that the word processor had to fix into your reply box. Then, and only then, should you press the reply button.

I’m about getting hacked off with some of the jibs and cat fighting on this forum. This past week has been truly awful. Either there is something in the air, or we are all feeling a little tetchy but I’m getting fed up reading ill mannered posts.
I’m dyslexic and use spell checkers, word processors and grammar checkers to check my written words all the time. I have a few problems now and then, but I always make an effort to not bastardise the English language. I also make efforts to answer questions from others and even help newbies, even though sometimes they should read the FAQs or search a little more. I just like to see others enjoy the hobby, after all that is all this is. It’s just a pastime, no need for such malice towards other who try and help.
Freakray doesn’t suffer this, and posts the correct answer, “search”. In fact he’s wrapped my knuckles a few times for not searching correctly, and rightfully so. This forum is getting very unfriendly, but if my efforts to make myself clear are not welcome, or my help is not needed I guess I can find other stuff to do with the little spare time I have.
It’s been a bad week on this forum. If this continues a lot of valid members are just going to leave. ZoomZoom, I hope I wasn’t on your blacklist. You are a helpful member, and a worthwhile person to listen to. Sadly, your efforts are sometimes unheeded.

Mick, I was in no way aiming anything toward you. Your posts are always written well, and more often than not, quite helpful. I have neve posted in a newbie thread saying the need to search. I always do my best to answer their question with the knowledge of "out of the ordinary" products that I have. I didn't mean that in malice. It really irks me when people "talk big" on the internet. someone posts something and then in return they get the internet version of im gonna whoop your ***. This forum is solely responsible for my return to the modeling world, and with the force of which my return has had. I am 100 times the modeler I was before I found this forum. All thanks to helpful members, constructive criticism, and the knowledge base found in the FAQ. Maybe we need to create a sticky at the top of the page titled forum etiquette. You take every appropriate measure to ensure that your posts are understandable by all. By taking those extra measures, I'm sure you greatly help those who use translators to visit and contribute to our wonderful forum here. But when things like the 60 line run on sentences only separated by the series of periods, it is hard to translate and understand. I was simply trying to stress the importance of proper grammer in such an international forum such as this one and the others in the AF community. I am sorry if I upset anyone.

This thing happens on all forums from one time to another. I'm going nowhere, at least here I can filter out the BS by putting people on my ignore list. I quit posting on another forum that you don't have the option to filter out the people who annoy. Seems those who have to be reminded about manners/etiquette rarely take the advice, rather they get worse.
Mickbench you have nothing to worry about, except modeling and related obsessions :uhoh:

I will agree with you there mickbench...It is getting really bad, but unfortunately its not easy to stop that from happening. I appologize i snapped at you about the whole rubbing compound situation...I've just been getting sick and tired of any time it seems i make a post there is a negative reply following it you know? Its not so bad in the model forum, its more so the main forums. Like I post in the Eclipse and Chrysler Sebring forums becuase i own a 01 Eclipse, and a 01 Sebring convertible...but it seems that whenever someone replies in those sections it is always on harsh terms and it has just started to get to me...So i appologize again, and i hope we can burry the hatchet on this one.

Well, I did acknowledge and thank you for your improvement in that regard but you still have a way to go before it could be said you are employing correct English, Canadian or otherwise.
A little bit of poor attitude is par for the course I'm afraid, as new members become familiar with our standards around here. Hopefully it is worth the effort of everybody to get along, heed advice, cut newbies some slack and just generally tolerate each other's opinions. Happily draconian measures like the bansick is something we very seldom have to employ in the modelling forums, unlike some other areas on AF.
Be friendly guys, if only to encourage PMan to spend more time with us. :) And get your entries in for the AFMOTY!
Anyway, most will agree this thread has more than run its course. Locked.
