Hey I was successfull in changing my starter!!!! Here is what I did incase any of you are having the same problem. I changed starter on a 1998 S-10 4.3L 4x2 with auto trans. First I disconnect the positive batter cable. Then I jack truck up and removed the left front tire. I then disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold(to allow easier access to the starter). Then I disconnected the wires from the starter. There is a support bracket that runs from the trans bell housing to the front of the engine that also has to come out. Disconnect the left side engine mount and jack engine up as far as you can. Take the solenoid off the starter and remove the starter from the truck. Put new starter in and replace soleniod before you mount the starter(to make it easier to reach the far side solenoid bolt). Replace everything else. Good Luck!!!!!!

Thanks for the post county_boy.
I'm happy that it all worked out for you.
I just want to say that in my opinion your suposed to pull the ground wire first. And I believe that's what the books say to do.
My reasoning to this is because if you touch any steel under the hood while swinging the wrench you won't end up with a big spark and possible damage.
And it's so easy to touch the surounding metal.
