Absolutely NOT the same.

I've got a few friends who go to Canada regularly. Have had them pick me up some a time or two.

Here's the thread I made after trying it the first time:

Thought it was pretty funny.

It doesn't matter what the taste is, it's the effects that people drink it for, it's highly hallucinogenic.

But it does however taste like ass. Imagine the worst tasting vodka combined with 100 proof moonshine.

Tastes like aniseed/licorice from hell.

I luuurve it.

*edit* Generally I shoot it though, instead of going through the whole sugar cube thing. When I get hold of some proper stuff with proper wormwood, then I'll take my time with it.

It definately is a whooole different sort of buzz.

After my last exam I had 1 beer, 4 shots of absinthe, 4.5 shots jager (with red bull) and fuck knows how much Bacardi 151 mixed with coke.

(Note, it wasn't all mixed together, this was my total at the end of it all)

It was good.

Yeah, I did the sugarcube thing the first time, just to check it out, but anymore, I don't even bother... the sugar doesn't do shit to the taste, so I just drink it straight. I ALWAYS stop after 2 drinks of it though.

buying absinthe online isn't always smart. i'm not sure about laws in UK, in US though, the absinthe you can buy is legal due to the fact there is a very low level of thujone in the drink. Tujone, for those who don't know, is the active ingredient in wormwood (Artemesia absinthium), which is used in the making of absinthe. This is the ingredient that give the psychoactive characteristics to absinthe.

make some yourself! yet to hear of anyone do that. might be fun!

my roomate tried making it over the summer out of 151 and wormwood, (he didn't want to spend the money on it that i do) Anyway it tasted like shit (worse than absinthe) and they couldn't stomach enough of it to feel effects.

Its a hallucinogenic alcohol. Tastes like licorice from hell, like Toksin said.

yup, like ace said, halucinogenic alcohol. It gets its properties from wormwood which you soak in grain alcohol (190 proof), then prepare it by by dipping a spoon of sugar in the mix, lighting the sugar on fire, letting it melt and drip into the mixture, which sets that on fire, then putting it out. i'm sure there are other, easier, cheaper ways of making it, but traditionally, that was how it was prepared.
EDIT: Wormwood's active ingredient is Thujone. This is specifically what gives Absinthe its halucinogenic properties. The intensity is based on the amount of Thujone present in the mixture. Many "legal" absinthe in US is usually a lower proof alcohol with almost no amount of thujone, if any.

~actually you only light eastern european style absinthe. for that you use regular sugar (no cubes) on a regular spoon, light it and let it melt and caramelize, then stir it in. Once its all stirred in add ice water and drink. This kind of absinthe contians less Anise stuff therefore it doesn't turn cloudy. In my opinion it tastes better than the other kind and I felt its effects more but with less drunken feeling. Also you are supposed to avoid dripping the flames into the drink, the flames are only for the spoonful of sugar, once the flame dies you stir in, by then it should be nicely caramelized.

For western european absinthe you use a sugar cube and a slotted spoon (like in your picture, thats actually a Lafee absinthe spoon made for using with Lafee parisian absinthe), then you drip ice water onto the cube until it all disolves, by then the absinthe should have turned cloudy white and is ready to drink ( I think the turning white thing is called "louche" or something). This kind has a very strong Anise flavor and turns very cloudy with water, I felt the wormwood effect less but got a "different" drunk off it.

I just ordered a bottle last night. I've never had anything shipped from overseas before. What the timeframe? I would imagine a couple weeks, possibly more with it being the holiday season.

just bought a 0,7l bottle of Absinthe (Vision Absinth)yesterday as a birthday present and it contains about 35mg/l of thujone(don't know if that is much, please tell me). There was a little bag of wormwood that came with it,you have to pour it into the absinthe and let it rest like 2 or 3 weeks(a little notice on the bag says you can even smoke the wormwood o_O).Should be fun :)

here's a pic of the bottle which i think looks really neat.

My uncle had some and said its no big deal.. i dunno i wasn't there, he tends to be full of it. Apparently shine tastes like shit too, i want to make it so i can run it in my car, it is the equivalent of 120-130 octane! Boost! Boost! Boost!

Absinthe that you can buy in the US is non hallucinagenic (sp?).

As far as real absinthe... From my understanding of it, it is legal to posess, but not to buy or sell within the US. Which is why we can buy it online or in another country and have it shipped or just carry it back here.

Ugh.. shrooms have killed my love for any kind of mushroom. I can't stand the sight of them.

The only way I can force shrooms down are with about 20 extra strength altoids.

The first time I drank absinthe was a few weeks ago, before I went clubbing. I lost my friends, my phone and told a lot of secrets that I shouldn't have. I, of course, can't remember anything of this

One little thing I did not see anyone talking about in referance to the Absinthe and the effects of wormwood.
If you ingest to much of the drug from the worm wood, or Absinthe, you will no be able to piss! this is no shit, renal failure , is the medical name and from what I've heard, it kills the Buzz altogether.
I think the doses one would take is particular to the weight of the individual ingesting the thujone, and how much of the toxins remain in the blood. So dont OD on the funny green elixer, it wont be fun at all.

something tells me thats just a myth. i'm too busy to research it now, so if u wanna make sure, check it out on erowid. (busy, and i'm on AF:screwy:) Besides, if it were true, i'm sure the amount u need to ingest is just silly.

cyprus106, pming ya. I have a couple of bottles of absinthe here in the states from europe.

ETA: I don't know about that on renal failure, from what I understand with the liver is that it takes a lot to suffer from liver disease that leads to renal failure eventually. I'm no doctor, so I could be completely wrong of course. But I doubt short term it'd do something like that, long term maybe just like all alcohols. There are a lot of myth's about absinthe though and back in the old days most of them were the truth. But the absinthe they make today compared to the stuff people used to make in their bathtubs, is extremely diluted and you ain't gonna seen the green fairy as easily as people used to before it got banned and stuff in some places. Heck with the way they dilute nowadays I doubt you could see the green fairy period. I haven't anyway yet.

i've been looking for that "myth", xero, can't find what you're talking about. Maybe you mean the exessive amount of alcohol taken in causes renal failure? Absinthe is usually pretty high, like 90% by volume.
Thujone remains in your system, but doesnt affect anything. It only remains there for a time, and depending on your intake of thujone, and whatever amount is still present in your system, is what determines the psychoactive experience.
There was some blurb i cant find now that i was reading how thujone can (arguably, as not clinically proven) affect your THC receptors in your brain while it remains in your system. other than that, i cant find any other effects thujone really has on a long term basis. but i haven't even found that "myth" on the web yet, either... i'm gonna keep lookin though. u never know, u might be right!

Didnt look to hard;

Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2004-52%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=wormwood+renal+failure&btnG=Search)

One would hav to drink some really cheap/badly made Absinthe which is everywhere. I wouldnt drink the intire bottle by your self, I know of two people, personaly who hav experianced renal failure, and went to the hospital. But if not treated immediately , It'll kill ya, no joke. But You surly on a full stomache could hav several ounces because most of the thujone is very low per glass, unlike the Original Absinthe.

To much alcohol will just cause alcohol poisoning. I guess you could die from that too,....Damn we just cant win can we.
