91 s-10 blazer rwd auto transmission makes a whining noise when changing gears.when i drive it real easy it doesnt make the sound but if i get on it a little it does.it does it in every gear and only when i reach around 2400 rpm.once it changes gears its quiet again. any advice would help. thanks in advance.

Replace the fluids and filter on the transmission.

This is done from underneath the truck by removing the transmission pan. Check the colour of the fluid ... if it is pink (or light purple) then tha transmission should be OK, if it is brown or black, then the transmission is on its way to breaking (possible worn out clutches). If it is black then you will need to have it re-built or replaced (it is probably cheaper to replace it with a transmission from a junkyard).

thanks for the information it has been about 15000 miles since ive done that. i was kind of looking for worst case. clutches was not one i was thinking about.the fluid looks good on the dip stick but i will replace the filter and fluid this weekend.

Excessive backlash between sun gear and planetary gears.
Lock plate on planetary carrier loose.
Defective thrust bearing.
Worn bearing bushings.
Excessive transmission axial play.
Unhooked parking pawl spring contacting governor hub.
Converter balancing weights loose.
Converter housing attaching bolts loose and contacting converter.
about the only real way to be 100% sure is take it to a tranny shop and have em look at it. its possible it could still be a planetary inside the transmission but its hard to tell without actually looking at it.

dang i was thinking pump or convertor maybe even govenor, i have to pull the engine out in the spring because of oil blow by and i would like to figure this out before i do so.maybe i can find a trans. shop to figure it out and when i pull the engine i can fix both.so once again thanks a lot.by the way this is my first write in on a forum and you have made it easy for me so i really thank you.i have looked at and read this forum and s10.org blazinlow.com and many others they do get addicting to just read and most i can answer but this one has stumped me for a while. thanks again.

Be careful with leaving the transmission till the spring. It might not last till then.

I had a transmission quit on me on the highway going 120 km/h and had a bitch of a time getting it home. My mechanic took one look at the oil and knew I blew it up because the oil was pitch black. He didn't even wait to rebuild it ... just replaced it with a good junkyard transmission.

You may want to take it in to have someone look at it now and see if it will last till the spring !!!

sparkling atf is always a sure sign of failure. Dark dark black atf is too.
