So the car is up and running, took it out for spirited drives last night, only to be awarded with a beautiful display of blue and red lights in my rearview. Which was fine, because the second I got the car working, I knew it was inevitable...because I simply couldn;'t lay off the boost.
I launched at a light, slipped the clutch at 4500, redlined first, let off half way through second, lights came on, and 100ft later I was on the side of the road with 3 cop cars.
Apparently the cop wasn't pleased with my 'exhibition of acceleration'...whatever, just like always I got out of it. Cops - 0, Geoff -15

Onto the race.

New kid started working at my job, has a mini-s with pulley, intake, exhaust. We being the car/racing crew of guys get him to race me tonight. To be 'fair' we went from a 40mph roll and I was at stock boost.

So after work, 6 of us roll out, the mini, my vr4, a max, a jetta, a ram, and a cav. 2 go up ahead and check for cops. 2 behind us slowing down traffic a bit. We decided he'd honk it down and we'd race until there was a decisive winner or until we hit a certain underpass where the jetta nad max were waiting.

He honks it down, and we're off. I started at about 37mph in 2nd (not ideal) with my window down listening for the horn. He jumps slightly ahead with his shorter gears and instant boost...maybe a few feet or so. But I'm on boost shortly and reel him back in. As he makes his shift to 3rd, I pass and redline 2nd a moment later with a halfcar lead. I nail 3rd so hard I thought I'd snap the shifter and pulled more. His shorter gears really killed him as he was shifting 2x as much as me. By the time I hit 4th around 100mph, I was a good 2 cars ahead. At this point I was extremely surprised he was holding on so well.

I stay on 4th for a bit, but as I pass 110 and see him drop anohter half car or so back, I saw a bend in the road coming up. Not entirely familiar with this part of the road, I decided I was the decisive winner and hit the brakes. As I slowed, he continued and took the turn at 120 like he was on rails.

The funny part was that our 2 friends were up ahead aroudn the bend and saw him emerge first, and so they thought I lost. But we all pulled over afterwards and exchanged stories, etc. If we had continued on, I would have only pulled as I was low in 4th and still pulling just as hard, whereas he was in 6th by 120 and would run out of rpms and gears ALOT sooner.
Anyway, a nice run, I was surprised how well he hung on, and again the mini's handling gets my respect. Hopefully more to come.

That was a good kill. I was actually quite surprised by how well the mini was able to keep up.

Nice kill. Yea I heard the pulley kit alone adds 20hp to the wheels. With all the performance parts out there now, I’m surprised we don’t see more hopped up mini's around. I’m not sure if that stage III kit is out yet but its suppose to push the mini to over 300hp. Can you even imagine?

thats simply insane, especially since the crumple zone on it is the driver's seat

Good kill. What was wrong with your car?

Those mini's handle extremely well. I've read that they have a 200+ hp version, but am not too sure of what mods it has.

Theres something about the mini-s that just makes me want to call it a 'bugger' really bad.

But yeah sounds like those buggers sure can move, especialy to almoast keep up with a vr4, and especialy one with a few mods.

Its called the John Cooper Works package. However you almost get 200hp with just the pulley upgrade. Theres a Stage II kit you can get on mini mania that brings the car to around 215 I think which is much cheaper then the JCW package.

What's wrong with my car...haha.

Well I needed a new ECU, which I finally got, so now I'm running on all 6 cylinders...which is goood, however I'm definantly not running right.
I have boost leaks, exhaust leaks, just 2 days ago I started getting bad hesitation from old plugs, there is still alot of work to get her running right again...so I may have beaten the mini by more, but that is the way the race went and I'm content with it.

The Mini's blown engine is the horsepower headquarter when the boost is altered, I think that's safe to say. Mini Madness has some performance packages that put the cooper ahead of the rest of the fleet but they're expensive. Car and drivers website wrote:

"A smaller supercharger pulley accelerates the blower speed by 15 percent and pushes boost from the stock 10.5 psi to about 14 psi. All of that alters the horsepower readings from 168 to a claimed 265".

Obviously there were a couple more parts used than just the a pulley, but still...coopers s's are bad ass with modifications (manly boost)
