Backlash

I had a Dana 35 with bad carrier bearings, a friend replaced them and told me the backlash was a little excessive, but only by 3-4 thousandths. Now if your a slow cost in a parking lot or somewhere it sounds like the ring and pinion are a little "lose & rattlely”, could this be the backlash. I'm going to tear into it this weekend and check for my self with a dial indicator. Just tiring to get a ideal of what might make that type of noise, also seems that it might have a little noise under acceleration too. But seems to stop at highway speed.
