transmission compatability question

I have a 94 formula, with an auto trans, I've pretty much blown the tranny, it doesn't want to go into second gear. I've decided for now, to put the car away for the winter, givin that I live in new england, so I was at the parts store getting a new starter for my blazer when I told the guy there about it, he said he had the trans from a 96 camaro that he pulled apart, he said he would sell it to me for 150, which is much lower than any estimates I've seen so far for a new/rebuilt/used whatever transmission.. my question is, will a 96 transmission work on a 94 car and if so, would any modifications be needed to be made to it?

my firebird has a lt1 350 in it, and he said the car he got it from had a 350 in it, so, I'd assume that its a lt1 too... but sometimes its not that simple, I know that the 94 has the performance button on the transmission hump and the newer ones don't

assuming this manual transmission is from an LT1 (and you should verify this first before even considering it) you will need to find out what all is included in the sale.
will he include the bell housing, the slave cylinder assembly, etc. You'll also need a shifter and a clutch pedal assembly from a manual car.
I'm not sure about the crossmember- if the auto and manual ones are interchangable. otherwise, you'll ned the manual transmission crossmember.
you will want any fasteners (bolts, washers, etc) with this, as well as the fly wheel. you'll need a clutch too. since you're doing this you should install a new clutch and have the fly wheel resurfaced.
And, then if you want the interior to look right- you'll need the center console plate from a manual car, too.
But you need to ask yourself- why is he selling a 6 speed manual trans so cheap? why did he take it out? If the synchros are shot, the trans needs a rebuild. it's not so simple as to replace them, the trans needs rebuilding. I spend almost 1600 on my 6 speed transmission rebuild.
When they rebuilt mine- the 5th and 6th gears were worn down and needed replacing (they're on the same shaft)
I'm not trying to talk you out of this- but I'm just sharing my experiences with this sort of thing

the trans he has is an auto, it was from a car he scrapped out for parts. they are both listed as 4L60-E transmissions, but I know that the newer 1s don't have the performance button the hump.. so is there any modifcations that would need to be made etc?

well, you know what they say... drop the bugga in..see if she works. lol well if anything, u can order a tranny from EBAY. i was supposed to, but they said shipping to hawaii would take 600+ >_< which was really bad.. they have racing trans and stuff..im not sure if they hav the 4L60E, but they have the 700R4..which is basically the same thing except w.o. the elctronic-ness...well..good luck.. i blew my tranny TWICE.
