1992 Ford Taurus Dimmer Switch

The dimmer switch on My Taurus to dim the dash illumination has stopped working. When I bought the car about 4 months ago the dash illumination worked fine. Then about 1 month ago I started realize that the dash illumination would flicker (dim then go back to being bright). Every once in awile when I would turn on the headlights the dash lights would not come on even theough the dimmer switch was on the brightest setting. back then I would just scroll the switch to off then back on a couple times then it would eventually come on. My problem is that the only time i can get my dash illumination to come on is if I scroll all the way so that the cabin light turns on. I have tried to slowly dim the switch to turn off the cabin light but leave the dash lights on but it doesn't work once the cabin light goes off the dash lights do also. Another thing is That I know it is not a fuse since everything else related with that fuse works (glove box light,trunk light, etc...). I am thinking that it is the switch and I was wondering how hard it is to replace that switch and if anyone had any advice.
