I am in the market for a 1990-1995 Mercedes SL 500 or SL 300. I would appreciate any positive or negative feedback or the 2 engines. That is the 500 vs the 300. For those who have the 300, does it seem to have enough power? What about gas mileage? Does anyone know of any particular problems with either one of them? Thanks for your input.

I hope that you money to burn .I purchased a 1990 sl500 that was showroom clean - interior and exterior with 45,000 mile on it 2 yrs ago , I have spent over $9,000.00 in repair bills and maintenance on this piece of shit since ownership. Something goes wrong at least every month, It is without question the worst car I have ever owned. However when everything works its a real fun car to drive. Stay away is my advice. Good luck

He's right, they can be costly if they're not mechanically perfect and the old SL this guy bought probably was only mint-looking outside and bad inside. 500 SL has 320 HP and gives about 16-17 mpg average. 300SL about 230HP which is a bit underpowered for a 4000+ pound car but I've seen owners getting up to 27mpg in the freeway, plus they last up to 200,000 miles and more. Beware of leacking engines and bad heads in both models, also make sure AC works and transmission doesn't kick or slip. Each will cost you 1000s. If you buy one expect to spend lotta money in maintenance/parts/labor. yep 500SL is a dream to drive, smooth, quiet, powerful, fast and stable at high speeds. Get Z-rated tires, they're safer and last longer.
