I have just learned from my daughter that yesterday she had an accident with her Volks Cabrio (I am not sure if it's '84 or '85) But I do know for sure it was made in Germany and was the last of the Cabrios made in Germany.
All the parts have German labels as well.
I don't know the extent of the damage....and she really doesn't either. But the place that towed it for her told he she may be better off just getting another car. (and she's very broke...needs a car)
I'm telling her not to just let the tow place keep it...not to even necessarily believe what they tell her...
If she can't afford to fix it....I think this car might make a great parts car. In the past... Everytime she takes it to a shop people offer to buy it...or want her to let them know when she wants to sell it.
She was not injured in the accident...nor was the other guy. She tell me the hit wasn't so forceful that windows were broken.
She was going to make a left through an intersection...from a stopped position....a guy came through the intersection going straight and was speeding up (after he appeared to be about to stop when she began proceeding through.) She realized he was not really stopping but speeding up... she applied her brakes in an icy situation (with poor tires) and slid into him...front right of her car. His car was barely damaged.
He was drivingg a company vehicle.
Does anyone think that it may be worth it to try to sell the car as is... to a Cabrio collector? Or possibly a skilled mechnic who loves volkswagons could fix it. Her boyfriend thinks they should just hang on to it until they can afford to fix it...because she loves this car so much.
I haven't seen it...but i sort of doubt it's really totalled....if no one was hurt and no glass destroyed. I asked her if the passenger side door opens...but she didn't know...because she was a bit shocked after the accident and didn't get details. I hope to get more information this evening.
Looking for advice....And what would be the best way and place to advertise it.
(If it's too expensive for her to repair...no insurance for collision and sounds like she may be at fault.) Both of them got inattentive tickets after they told their stories to the officer who arrived. Thanks

I'd suggest making an appearance at VWVortex Classifieds (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeromain?id=87). There are plenty of people on there that are very interested in acquiring these types of parts. Depending on location, you might be surprised how much value the parts have vs. what the insurance company would settle on a totalled car.
It can be a little time consuming and even emotionally trying since you essentially have to have a wrecked car sitting around for a while as the vultures move in on it. But from a cost perspective, it could make a big difference on the replacement vehicle. From a vintage perspective, think of it as an organ donor - these cars are charming and it only gets harder to keep them on the road without these types of opportunities.
That being said, it might be possible the car could be repaired. But since book value is less than $1200 for these cars in MINT condition, it would be a miracle if insurance values it more than a couple hundred bucks. You'd have to really love the car to pursue this. This decision depends on how messed up things are. In my case, I have a salvage title 89 Cabriolet - living proof that a Cabriolet can still rise from the ashes of insurance company condemnation!

Most importantly, I am relieved that your daughter is okay. The car may very well have given its life for hers - an honorable sacrifice considering the fragility of life.
