so, theres a black cylinder that the smog stuff and one of the fuel lines plugs into, and im nto sure what it is. the other fuel line plugs into the fuel pump... i opened it and it seems to be a filter of some sort, but what iw as wondering was if i want to remove all of the smog stuff, do i need that in there? and if i can remove it, what do i hook the other fuel line into? thanks a bunch -danny

That sounds like a fuel evaporator canister and will not in anyway help horse power to remove it. Excess fuel goes there to be reused or evaporated. I can't be certian from your description.

Does the fuel line run out of the fuel pump and then into the canister? I believe it does, and if I'm right, from there it should run into the fuel filter or right to the carb. So I wuold think if you wanted to remove it, you'd probably just have to replace the fuel line and run directly from the pump to an in line fuel filter, then right to the carb.

Yeah, it is the fuel canister, I have one on my 76 Nova too, buy the filters, I found them at Farm and Fleet 1 buck a piece, it actually helps gas mileage by returning the vapors, and elimating it won't do anything for perfomance. You can un hook it from the carb and put i the hose, if you have rochester, not sure about quadra jet, bu the double jet has a vavle inside the carb that sucks it shut if you get a vacuum leak, so either of those ways it won't hurt if you hate it that much.
