Alright, reliability on imports is generally much better than american cars. However, in general american cars are going to be faster than importated cars, at least for the same price range.
Manual cars are much faster than automatics, but they are a lot less convenient.
As far as 2 Fast 2 Furious, that movie is totally unrealistic. Don't expect your vision to go blurry when you go over 100 MPH. Some of the speeds of the imports are way overemphasized don't believe everything you see.
Now american cars don't break every month or anything, they may not be quite as reliable as imports, but they really aren't all that bad.
I would strongly suggest getting a Rear Wheel Drive car, unless you live somewhere where its almost always snowing.

Welcome to USA brotha. I would personally get a 240SX. They are rear-wheel drive and you can swap in a turbocharged SR20DET. You can get the car rather cheap if you get a 89 - 92 and still have money for the swap. youll also need the transmission, ECU, and Harness (I believe)

I suggest that you put the phone away while driving, and go out and test drive some cars. find a used car dealership near you and just see what feels right.
and remember, if you are looking for a good quality, fast, relatively inexpensive car... pick two of the three choices, because that's what you'll most likely end up getting.

Please avoid typing with all of that slang and words like "da" and "lil," you won't get any respect here if you do.
Second, what is more important to you? Speed, reliability, looks, etc?
Third, the Fast and the Furious movies have just about zero educational value as far as cars go. 99% of the people on AF don't care about big wings, spinners, and loud mufflers, they look rediculous.
Finally, yes, RWD cars are generally quicker then FWD cars, but you sound like you don't have alot of experience with performance cars, so you might want to start at the bottom and work your way up. A really fast car can get an inexperienced driver in alot of trouble. A good car that has alot of tuner appeal might be something like an Acura Integra. You can get them under $7,000 no problem, they look decent, they are pretty quick, they are reliable, and there is a good aftermarket for them. As for automatic v. manual, its all down to personal preference. Personally, I'd stop text messaging while driving and get a manual, but thats up to you.

Domestics are plenty reliable.
I'll think otherwise when I see any import with 196,000 miles on the stock bottom end whoop my Camaro's ass.
The way you talk and lack of knowledge leads me to believe you'd better go for a show car or something because all that gratuitous bling slows you the hell down.

Manual is pretty much superior to automatic for performance driving of any sort, but you have to know how to use it, and use it well. Based on your info, what you're looking for right now is an economical, reliable, and somewhat sporty car that will introduce you to performance driving. You mentioned earlier that you like the way the Celica looks, and it just so happens that I think a '94-'99 Celica GT with a five-speed manual would be perfect for you. It isn't that fast out of the box, and there isn't a whole lot of aftermarket for it, but it's still sporty enough for you to get a good feel of how to push a car to its limit. It's also extremely reliable and very good on gas. After you've had a couple of years with it to become a good driver, then you can move on to something with rear-wheel-drive and a big aftermarket.

aight, i just came here 2 da US, i used to live in da middle east!!u know where da war is at. anyway over there we didnt care bout cars much cuz we lived in lil villages and didnt have lots of money for cars, n mostly cuz of da war. i just came here a couple months ago and was amazed by all the cool fast cars. i didnt have money to buy a car so i took ma relatives 94 camry, which sucked, cuz after i saw da movie 2f2f i wanted to have a car like tht, i started saving money and reading about all da different cars and there mods. at first i wanted to get a camaro or a mustang cuz they have lots of horse power, but ppl told me tht domestics aint reliable. and i cant afford spendin money on fixin da car , cuz i have to try to save da money for mods. i really love imports. i like the way a celica looks, but heard they aint fast but very reliabe, but not really good for lots of mods. anyway i ended up a lil confused between a 97 prelude or 240sx same year model and both in good condition. i heard they r really good cars. so i want to know wht da pros and cons of both r . and what car would u get if u were me.
i am still new wid all this, but i can drive real good and fast. and i have about $7000. i want a fast enough car wht tht amount, either spendin it all on da car, or spendin a lil on da car n da rest for mods.
oh n should i get it n auto or stick, am kinna lazy and alwys txt while drivin so i thought of gettin an auto but read tht stick is better , so i dunno?
 u guys might laugh when u hear am 19 , but wht can i do ma parents made me live in a town tht didnt car much for cars :disappoin
i really like this website cuz i fond alot of info on it bout cars
Wow...I don't know what to say
1) please don't talk like that...13 year olds on AIM talk like that
2) you text msg while yor driving?
3) its 19 year olds like you imitaing F&F and text msging while driving that make make insurance rates high for 20 year olds like me
ummm how much money did you save? Id suggest getting something like an Integra GSR, Cavi Z24, or a 240SX, or even a non vtec prelude. something quick, relatively reliable, with an easy 5speed...a good learners car
and your my hero of the day

Don't buy a 240SX. Get a Pontiac Firefly, so when you inevitably get in an accident from not watching the road, you can die easily and the roads will have one less shitty driver on them.

240's are nice id like to have one. As a matter of fact thats a great car to learn on. its RWD which will teach you about driving. The part where you said " i know how to drive fast" Whats that supposed to mean? Does that mean your going to be like evey other idiot on the road tailgating me and my poor Civic? I hope not. Anyway, I think a 240 is a great choice.

welcome to af. and first off domestics are not unreliable in general but there are some that tend to be pretty shitty. and not all imports are reliable either. i agree with kman about the 94-99 celica, that is my favorite model and are very, very reliable and get good gas mileage. theyre not that fast but handle well and could be made very fast with an engine swap. check out the celica forum if u have more questions. you prolly like the newer celicas better and those are nice too but more expensive and less reliable. some other good cars for you would be the integra, prelude or 240sx. on the domestic side maybe a firebird( i really like the newer ones) a camaro ar maybe a mustang although i dont like stangs. or maybe a probe.

and manual tranny is better for racing but not way faster than an auto as some would say. manual is more fun though and i would recoomend it. if you dont drive manual well though you could get smoked by autos all day long.

Hey smartass I hope you get reported for being an idiot.
Was that directed at the topic creator or me? I suppose I was a bit too harsh, but really, are you fine with people driving while not watching where they're going?
I'm not one of the "always follow the speed limit, stop for a full 3 seconds at every stop sign" kind of people. I am, however, a big advocate of common sense... looking where you're going in a car while driving it should be common sense.
That said, to be more encouraging and less hostile to the topic creator... buy a manual, leave the cell phone off. Driving should be way more fun than texting. If you care about texting people while driving, you bought a boring car. Don't buy a boring car.
Not dissing the Camry... it's a great car for practical purposes... just probably not what you're looking for.
I would guess that if you get a manual 240Sx, Celica, Integra, or whatever, your cell phone would be the last thing on your mind. Just be sure to get a manual... more fun that way, and then you won't be bored enough to play with your cell phone while driving.

If you get a manual, you'll have a hard time even holding your cell phone while you drive, so that'll take care of that problem.

Of course I wish I had a WRX now, but I don't regret it. First of all, when I got the car, I was (and still am) a noob at manual transmission, not to mention the fact that I'm honestly not a very good driver yet, so it would've been a complete waste for me to get a WRX. And secondly, I'm starting to realize that I don't love the Impreza like I used to. In the $25K range, my eyes are wandering more towards things like, say, lightly used RX-8's.

ok, first i would like to thank you all again. you guys have been lots of help..
about me txt messaging while driving , i dont do it all the time, only when my friends that are overseas want to talk. as i said on my first message i am new in america not just new with cars, so i have lots of friends back home, and i got to stay in touch with them even while driving.. anyway maybe as shinkutat said its because i am not enjoying the car.
now here is my latest news, i found a 99 prelude that is in pretty good condition for 5 thousand something, isnt that cheap for that type of car. i didnt check if it was a v-tech or not. i dont know if i should get it or not.
i also found a 94 bmw 325i, is it a fast car stock compared to a 240sx same year model also stock???
and i am still looking for a 240sx to check it out since thts what everyone is recomending
as for the celica everyone says there not as fast as the rest , so why get it....i am looking for a car that is realiable but it also has to be one of the fastest realiable car i can find, and i dont car about the looks at all, any car can look good to after adding a little artistic touch to it..

Guys, none of this fits together. Where does someone from a little village in the middle east ("where the war is"?), knowing nothing about cars, etc etc. And then the slang. Oh, c'mon. I appreciate all y'all's sincerity, but this guy ain't for real.

I wouldn't say he knows nothing about cars... just they probably have different sets of cars available over there... more Mercedes, BMW type stuff.
A friend of mine is from Palestine, he has driven plenty of Mercedes and BMWs, but isn't really familiar with, say, Nissan.

Good point. There's not a great deal of "middle class" in that part of the world; those who are rich enough to drive, are generally rich enough to drive luxurious European brands.
