Hey...
For christmas I want to get my mother a remote starter for her 2000 Grand AM. I bought the whole kit and install at Future shop intending to split the costs with my brother and sister. Now my brother wants me to take it back and just get the kit because he can do the install himself. I'm confident that he can not do the install himself because of the theft lock and everything else. Can someone please give me a run down of whats involved in doing this sort of install, and what the consequences of not doing it properly are?
Your help would be greatly appreiciated
Thanx
Jamie

I had a remote starter put in my 2000 grand am gt by a qualified technician and it took over 5 hours to install. He did a great job (it has been working for 4 years now) but it was a much bigger job than I thought.

On any grand am newer than 96 there is a serperate module that works as the security overide so the car will even start will no key in the ignition. This module alone is around $50 if u know the right people. Then you have to access the harness under the steering wheel to do it and in most cases this will void any warrenty left on the car. I have installed remote starts on numerous older cars including my 92` grand am and my gf 94 lumina. but even i got in over my head when i went to put one in my 96` grand am. Just a note it took me and the stereo dealer 12 hrs to install the remote start and security system in my car. The hardest part was getting the grand am to accept the module so the car would even run period. If your relative does it himself hes in for a treat...

If you have all of the wiring diagrams, and sometype of ignition harness, it's not bad at all.
Mine started the first time after installation. This was for a 2000 grand am gt.
