no cold start

Ok. So ive got a 97 Gst and when it gets cold out, i would say 5deg f and colder my car wont start. I had the same problem last year. I was over at my buddies house and i went out to start it and it was at least 0 outside and it didnt start. It sat in his heater garage for days and still wouldnt start but i fannaly got it. brought it home and had the starter rebuilt because there were broken magnets in the starter so just as soon as it woulde fire once the starter would disengage and couldnt start. That was last winter. By the time i got it fixed it was spring so i thought all my problems would be fixed. It got cold here last night and now wont start again. it will at least constantly turn over without disengaging the starter but still only fires once in a while. Oh yeah, ever sence i got the i thought it seemed like it would turn over slow and now in winter it seemes worse. battery and starter are both good so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

how exactly do you know the battery and starter are good? did you buy new ones? even if new they can be junk parts. even if your battery tested good, they might not have done a full battery test. the easiet thing to do is if it does it again go get a battery, and if that doesnt fix it then return it. from the sounds of it it seems to be a bad battery.

I still have the same problem. Get you IAC and your TPS checked out. TPS is $60, IAC is $50. Get the TPS first and see if that works.

What weight oil are you using? It's cold so the oil's thicker.

nope, ive got a saturn that im building up. its amasing what they can do and you wont expect it. very cheap, doesnt take alot of power to get them going fast and the engines are built very stout and are full aluminum using the lost-foam casting. mine n/a bolt-on motor made 116hp and 112 lbs/ft of torque on 149,000 mile motor. it doesnt seem like much, but i can easily beat my friends eclipse and any honda. ever since i have driven it harder, i have gone through 2 clutches in a matter of 6 months(original lasted 148,000 miles and went do to oil) since it makes great torque throughout rpm range. torque curve is straight. im trying to build a motor for it now which is in my basement and the minimum horsepower number im looking for is 300 to the wheels. these s-series cars, if equipped with right motor and certain years matter, they can be something fierce, not what youd expect from a saturn. and thats why i got it. i did my research, and the bang for the buck is there since engine is stout(just need rods and pistons) and transmission is something else since the gears are constantly meshed together so no need to beef up transmission but differentials are another thing since they shear pins and blow out.

But back to the thread! I would absolutely definitly get a new battery, I wouldn't be surprised if thats your problem. My other car (02 cavalier) had the same problem cause the battery was a defect, it worked great for 2-3 months, then out of know where, it just wouldn't start (Also, just to let you know, the day that the battery in my cavalier went bad, it was overnight, and it had reached about 30 degrees)

yeah thats typically when a battery fails. in the cold! wonderful running out to your car hoping to warm it up and here it barely rotate or maybe none at all.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I am going to change the battery and see if that does it. Hope it does. If not I guess ill keep trying. But thanks again for all the help.
