I have a 2001 grand prix gt 3800 series not supercharged it has a dash board red line at 5500 and when I excellerate to pass to take off from start and stay in the gas at 4500 rpm's it goes to a misfire and wont go up to 5500 and wont shift unless I let my foot off the gas just a little. Problem is I have a 3yr 36000 mile extended warranty and the dealership has it at the shop telling me that it is the rev limiter. I dont buy it cause I do know a bit but not specifically this car. In neutural it hits 5500 and the rev limiter like normal but in drive it sends a signal to the computer multiple missfire. I have almost been in two head on accidents with the car cause of this and it has me concerned. Has anyone heard of this or have a suggestion of what i might suggest for them to check out. The car has 53000 miles on it. They have replaced plug wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, trany flush, fresh oil change, fuel treatment, and adjusted the map cause it was too lean of fuel at 4500 the first time i took it to them a month ago. due to personal restraints I was unable to get it back sooner to them. now they have it and are telling me it is noraml. If you have the same car what is the red line on yours?

Have your CAT convertor checked out. 2001 - 2002 Grand Prixs were delivered with flaky CATS. The CAT warranty was extended by GM to 10 years or 120K miles, whichever comes first.

BTW - The rev. limiter should cause cutoff at around 4000 - 4500 rpms when in neutral or park.

So what about while driving? What the computer told them was it was traveling at 37 mph and 4800 rpm when the misfire accured. Also why did GM put a dash that says 5500 is when the orange begins and shouldn't the car shift if it was getting close to the max rpm while under excelleration.

The multiple misfires is causing the rev limiter to kick in early. I was having this problem on my GTP after I installed new plug wires. Wouldn't hit the rev limiter at all. Actually had wrong wires from an autoparts store. Put old wires back on, misfires went away runs like a dream.

As Bob said the cat may be limiting the amount of exhaust leaving the engine and it is causing the misfires. Common problem with this 01 and 02 model years. If you can't get the exhaust out it can't burn fuel properly the misfires will occur.
