I have been having a little bit of grinding going into 3rd gear when going through the gears quickly, now all the sudden it is impossible to go into 3rd any way I drive. Is this just the synchro or is it more? Also where can i find transmision parts and how much they cost? Is this something I could do myself or should I have someone who does it alot do it?
thanks

3000's have a bolt on the back of the transmission that comes loose, its a common problem, check out this link http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=301511

theres a whole bunch more info. and i think some pics if you search that site for "5th gear"

i would suggest not driving the car as much as you can to avoid costly repairs later and i'm not say this is your problem but just a heads up to a possibility

your 3rd gear syncro is going out, first try to put some syncromesh (i have BG SyncroshiftII and i love it) and see if it will work!!! DON'T go with the crappy ass GM syncromesh couple of people on 3si had problems with them. The BG is about $13 a quart depending where you get it and i think you need 2.7 or 2.8qts.

you can get your syncro's from http://supercar-engineering.com/sc/index.php?cPath=50

good luck

pm me if you have anyother questions

where did you find it so cheap? you must share this wonderful information!

before i put my LSD insert in my tranny, i was using the GM Synchromesh (aka Pennzoil Synchromesh). and after hearing about all the bad experiences on 3si (although i found NO metal shavings and only had good things to report), i decided to switch over to a different, Synthetic fluid. BG Synchroshift I & II good choices, along with some Redline fluids, but just too costly b/c of shipping. I did, however, find some Royal Purple at $8 a quart at a local auto shop (O'Reilly's). that's what i'm running now and it shifts amazingly smooth, no grinding at all!

The product just says BG Synchroshift but the picture shows BG Synchroshift II. Isn't BG Synchroshift I just for automatic trannies and the II is for manual? Hopefully what you got is a II cause that's an awesome deal. I paid like $65 for 3 quarts so $33 would be SUPER! :p

Yeah when I was looking online I saw alot of places selling just BG synchro shift and i think it was for front wheel drive cars. When I saw this i thought it was just that but when I enlarged the picture it said otherwise. Also when I searched on this site for it, I typed in BG synchroshift 2 and it came up as a match. I guess time will tell. Ill let you know if it is what it should be.

My friend has the Royal Purple in his RT/TT and he loves it, i am going to change out my tranny fluid again (this would be the 4th time in a year, because of 2 clutchs etc. etc. etc.) and see how good it is. I probably have payed over $200 for BG Syncroshift in the last year alone :)

Not too sure here, but if the 3rd gear synchro is for both 3rd and 4th how come Im only having the problem with 3rd?

disregard the previous question, I got the impression that they were the same because they always say 1/2 nd synchro and 3rd-4th synchro. Ive been reading alot about the tranny and rebuild and what not. I now know

I changed the fluid and it is working alot better shifting into 3rd but its still bad, goes to show how incredibly bad it really was. I guess Im going to have to change the third gear synchro. Since Im broke Im going to try doing it myself since I have so much time and two transmissions. I have a 92 stealth tt parts car with a tranny but with that tranny it is grinding a bit into 2nd and 3rd but not bad at all. Anyone want to give me some feedback on this. I need to get the service manual before I start anyways. thanks

for transmission info, i've always gone to this site: http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html, then click on "Drivetrain" at the top, then scroll down to the "Manual Transmission". i found several very detailed write-ups WITH PICTURES on how to install a LSD insert. i just perused it quickly, and there's a bunch of pics on the tranny rebuild. although you have an AWD 3/S transsmission, they're pretty similar to the DSM AWD transmissions. so those write-ups would be very very helpful.

also, yes, as you said, you should purchse SERVICE manual. you can get it here at www.manualcd.org. i have that manual on cd, and its amazing. its actually service manuals for a bunch of DSM cars AND the 3000GT (all models and years).
