My 1990 G reg 1.4 LX escort keeps stalling at junctions and the idle speed is very erratic, doesn't do this all the time, only when car seems to have warmed up. any ideas on what to check on car. Its a normal carburretor model I believe.

Check for vacuum leaks. Or maybe a bad EGR valve.

i would also add some fuel injector/carberator cleaner.

If it does have a carburator there should be a mixture screw at the base and a speed screw on the linkage. Adjust the mixture by turning the screw counterclockwise until it runs evenly. If it won't stay running to adjust the mixture, then turn the idle speed screw clockwise until it will run, then adjust the mixture. Then back the speed screw off and adjust the mixture again. You should turn the mixture screw clockwise until it starts to miss out, then back it off 1 turn. Do all of this after the engine has warmed up. It doesn't do it when it is cold because of the choke being on. If you have fuel injection disregard this post. It's a whole 'nether ball game.
Check the Positive Crancase Ventilation (PCV) valve. It could be causing the same symptoms.

Thanks, I have found out that a fuel cut-off solenoid on the side of the carb (right hand as you look at the car) has the wire missing from it, new part has been ordered but no-one seems to know where wire leads?
