Brand new 2005 Vue has been making an extremely strange thump since day 1. Typcially its 3 thumps in a row and it comes from the back of the vehicle. No real pattern. Happens when driving or when idling. Only potential pattern is that it happens during initial travel and does not occur during highway travel. Asked the dealer to check it out and they of course didn't hear it on their test drive. They found nothing wrong and asked questions about the gas tank. But it occurs on full tank, half tank or empty and its definitely not a liquid noise. Anyone have a similar noise???? :screwy:

I've heard a similiar noise on our "pre"owned (used) 02 Vue we just bought. to me it sounded as if the metal was expanding/contracting under the car. Plus it was an extremely cold day out, and the gas tank was just filled up ( since we just brought it home that day) that might have had something to do with it or maybe it's the metal of the exhaust system? So far the noise has subsided for the moment. Our other 04 Vue has not made that noise yet. Hopefully this give you a direction to look into

Yes..
We have the same problem with out 2005 Vue.
It has been in to the repair department 4 times in 4 weeks.
The mechanics are clueless.
They have no idea what the problem is and now are trying to contact the engineers at Saturn. Apparently they have lots of holiday time off.
I am thinking Lemon Law.

My 05 Vue makes the same thumping sound. Saturn dealer told me it was some kind of vent valve in the fuel tank. No known fix you just have to live with it. Even offered to sell me a new one at cost!
