Scratch Building Tutorials

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone here has or knows of good scratchbuilding/modding tutorials or could just answer some of my questions right here (pictures would help A LOT :)).
I'm totally new to scratch building and i'm not sure how to go about doing some... I mean, i've done a couple modes to my first model, like tail lights(still looking to pick up some bright white leds, still no good pics of the tails though) and i cut off the bottom of the bumper and lowered it; other than that, i'm totally new to this, talk to me as if i were a 3 year old:)
My biggest problem is trying to visualize how you guys use these styrene sheets to help build your things. Since i haven't seen any pictures of this method in process it's hard for me to understand it. I don't see how you guys can bend, shape and mold these piecs into something that isn't flat.
What methods do you guys use to get these nice curved edges out of epoxy putty and how do you keep it looking symetrical(sp)?
When creating a new bumper/frontend of the car out of styrene and (epoxy)putty, do you ussually build right off the car, or do you creat the bumper and then glue/attach it to the car? Same goes for the sideskirts and rear bumper.
On a similar note, i should know the anwser to this question, but i don't:) Wet/Dry sandpaper, what does that mean, do you dampen the sand paper and then begin to sand? Does that make the sandpaper smoother(higher grit) because i work at a hardware store and the highest grit we sell is 600 and i think it's wet/dry, it feels extremely find, like velvet, or is this still too rough?
Thanks.
