93 camry doesn't start without moving gear shift

I occasionally have difficulty starting my 93 camry without moving the gear shift back and forth in the park position while turning the key. Eventually when I hit just the right spot it will start. Someone told me I may need a new neutral safety switch. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any other ideas?

Yep. Neutral saftey switch. My 93 does that same thing from time to time, but aparantly not nearly as bad as yours. Definately need to get that replaced.

vbcamry....
Common problem in many cars with AT. As IT said, new switch should take care of it.

It probably is the switch, but there is a test for this in the Haynes Manual. Check this out 'cause it may be a cable adjustment.

Thanks for the reply--Do you know if this is an easy fix or one I should definitely take to a quality repair shop? I am not very good when it comes to car repair-sorry to say.

Thanks Joe, I definitely need to get one of those books for this car.

Hey vbcamry, I was having the same exact problem you had and I was told maybe it was the neutral switch but I am almost certain that you dont need that, it is your cable adjustment that is not lined right. If you open your hood and look down right in front of the transmission(in front of the neutral switch you will see a lever, you need to loosen the screw with a 10mm or 12mm(cant remember) wrench and push the lever down(to the right). Do this while your car is off and in the neutral position. You will have to push the lever up two notches and tighten the bolt but the key is to hold the lever slightly down(to the right) while tightening the bolt. These instructions are not the best but get a haynes manual and you will be straight.
