97 Sebring

My son owns a 97 Sebring coupe.I don't know what you call the part that is causing the loud noise.The only thing I know that it is located from the exhaust and the manafold and that it is conists of two pipes .One is a braided pipe and the other a plain pipe,but they both connect in the form of a "Y." Can this part be patched or do we really have to spend the $600.00 to retreive it?
