Help with my air compressor and airbrushing.

OK, I have already searched for a definate answer but couldn't find one.
First I would like to say: Thanks to Vric for "helping" me choose the Badger 155 Anthem as my first airbrush. But before I purchase it from ebay, I want to know if it will fit my (very loud) compressor.

Here are some pics.

I guess this is a quick connect/disconnect?

So, would I need anything else for the Badger?
Also I might get a moisture trap in the near future, would I need anything else for the trap? Thanks :iceslolan

Hi D_LaMz, that is basically the same as my comp, remove the hose from this fitting:
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/6628/dsc015778ie0me.th.jpg (http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc015778ie0me.jpg)
if your Badger airbrush airhose has a 1/4 bsp fitting on the end it will screw straight on, if it hasn't you can buy a fitting which will take the small Badger fitting upto a 1/4 bsp, try your local hobby shop, they should be able to help you out, if you want a water trap get something like this from a place that sells comp spares:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2654/mm000120550c2bb.th.jpg (http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mm000120550c2bb.jpg)
you'll need a fitting like this to go in the output side of the filter:
http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/1992/mm0002101658rg.th.jpg (http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mm0002101658rg.jpg)
just connect up your hose to the fitting and away you go, oh, nearly forgot, get some "PTFE" tape as well to make nice air tight joints.
Let me know how you get on and if this has helped you. :2cents:

You might need some fitting, but they are cheap and easy to find. you will know when you will receive your airbrush.

You might have some hard time to set your compressor at low PSI. it's a very powerful one and there isn't much room between 0 and 20psi. You will be able, but you will have to be very slow when adjusting the pressure.

Then the good news, it's huge !! once filled, you will have enough air to work on 4 body in a row. So it's loud, but once filled, you will not ear anything since it will not need to run while your work.

So now that I have an Iwata SAR instead of the Badger, I need to get the iwata hose for it and most likely the iwata pistol grip filter. BUT I don't think the hose will hook up with the compressor and I don't know what fittings to use! Plus when I get the fittings on the compressor, can I switch back to the old hose in the picture?

Also what is this tool?
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/5663/dsc016216ir.jpg
And will this work in cleaning the airbrush and acrylics?

sparknotes:
- don't know what fittings to use with an iwata hose and pictured compressor.
- will I be able to switch back to old hose and take off the new fitting?
- what is that tool for and will the cleaner work for the airbrush?

I can help a bit:

- I THINK the Iwata hose will conntec to standard hose fittings on the compressor: The only differences between Paasche, Badger, Testors, etc are how the hose connects directly to the airbrush, not the compressor (Though Testors' hose has threads for a can molded to the end of theirs, and you screw on an included adapter for the compressor). I believe it's 1/4" NPT. Home Depot and other stores have all the fittings you will need.

- I recommend getting a hobby-grade regulator and air filter/water trap. I got one from Paasche that works well. The reason for this is that the gauge on the hobby regulators often only goes to about 60psi, and that makes it much easier to differentiate between say 15 and 18 psi, as Vric said. I tried the big hardware stores ones and it was just too difficult.

- For cleaning acrylics, almost any solvent cleaner will work, from 91% isoproyl alcohol to window and household cleaner to those large bottles of 'airbrush cleaner' in art stores. At the end of the day use something like lacquer thinner to really clean it out, and then spray some alcohol or other acrylic-safe thinner through it so you don't affect later painting sessions. Most acrylic thinners don't get dried paint off just by passing over it, so if you need to clean something really stubborn off, lacquer thinner is the way to go.

- That Tesors cleaning station really works: It keeps the overspray and most of the fumes down when cleaning your airbrush.

^^^ So I will get the iwata hose and see if it fits the compressor, but if it doesn't then I will need a 1/4" NPT fitting.
-I'm ok using that regulater but I will get the iwata filter.
-Ok, I got it windex for brief cleaning and lacquer thinner for the final cleaning.

A big THANKS TO YOU !!!!

So now I need and answer to
"- will I be able to switch back and forth to old hose and take off the new fitting?"

The Iwata hose is unique.
The little wrench is to remove the tip, which you'll almost never do unless you completely clog the brush.

My Iwata hose has a built in adapter, so I have to remove the adapter that I use for my Badgers and Testors/Aztec airbrushes.

Well got the hose and filter today, but I have a problem with the filter. It won't fit with the bottle.

get an extension hose, and have the filter as though it's a "remote" filter, the hose will fit in the space between bottle and joint.

What size thread is on the outfeed of the filter?

you shouldn't use that bottle anyway.. WAY too big.. you can paint your bedroom with that :D Even the Hose is a tight fit. I still don't understand why Iwata give this piece of junk with such a good airbrush.

Get a 1oz or 1/2oz jar.

Thanks for the info Vric. Heck, I even put this in boiling water and it doesn't deform! So will the paasche and testor bottles work?

I THINK they will. You will want to look at those 'fast blast' caps: That is just a straight piece of plastic tube from the bottle to the airbrush, so it's easier to clean out. The only downside is they only fit the large 1 and 2 ounce bottles, and not the smaller 1/2 bottles the Testors Model Master/Acryl paints come in. You can get the caps at Micheals and AC Moore as well as most art supply and hobby shops.

I would try the Badger "color cup" which is very usefull. Those bottle are just too big imo.
