I ordered Tamiya wax at my hobbyshop.
I haven't seen it in action yet, I figured that it would work.
I have the same questions though; about fingerprints and such.

When I mentioned Tamiya wax to a long-time car modeling friend of mine he almost slapped me. I had just bought some automotive lacquer so his question was why I didn't use the wax made for that type of paint -> a wax like Turtle or something. I don't know how that will react to Humbrol or Tamiya Acrylic (I don't know what paint YOU use) but since I used washes of artists' oil paints on Tamiya acrylics while building planes, I guess you could try that.
Try Turtle Wax out on some scrap plastic first (if you don't use automotive paints).
Good luck!
Erik.

Hmmmmm, to make myself clear..... I didn't understand myself when I re-read the above post...:o
Since my Tamiya paint wasn't "attacked" by the Oil-paint-wash (You know: some artist's oil paint heavily diluted with white spirit) while building those aircraft, I think it's safe to use Turtle-Wax on a Tamiya paint job. I'm not sure about Humbrol or any other enamel-based paint. Therefore it's best to spray some paint on a piece of scrap plastic and try the wax. But why not use real automotive paint?? Guiddy has written quite a comprehensive article on automotive paints. It's in the Gallery Section.
Good luck & happy modeling
